he didn't just go west as horace greeley might have urged as a young man. he was compelled to go west. events forced him in that direction. and we will get to that. but before we head off into the badlands i want to give you a little brief background on theodore roosevelt. the roosevelt aficionados are probably going to be familiar with this, but i think there's some high points in his life that we need to touch on. he started life as a city kid in new york city. and he was a member of a social elite. the knickerbocker who were people who could trace their ancestry in america back to the dutch who arrived here in the mid-1660s. he was a fairly old new york family. his grandfather was one of the five richest men in manhattan. the family made their money on glass. they produced a lot of the window glass that new york city needed as it grew. they were also into banking and a lot of wise investments in new york real estate. young roosevelt was an avid outdoors person almost from childhood and also an avid hunter he wasn't very healthy. he was sickly as a child.
