we're told house democrats may be briefed by justice department inspector michael horowitz. he's investigating the fbi's actions in the 2016 election, the hillary clinton e-mail investigation and the first stages of the investigation in a possible trump campaign connections with russia. joining me is cnn's cakara scannell. >> reporter: we reached out to the inspector general's office this morning and awaiting word to see if that will go through. this meeting is of a lot of importance because yesterday when deputy director andy mccabe resigned abruptly, we learned chris wray, the fbi director sent an e-mail to the entire staff hinting at what was behind mccabe's sudden exit. in that e-mail to the staff, director wray said he was not swayed by politics and would not comment on the inspector general's report. that led people to believe there might be a connection. sources also tell cnn that mccabe was told by wray that he was going to bring in his own team. now, mccabe was expected to resign and retire from the fbi after a 20-year career in march. the exit on monday was very su

horowitz sending a letter to ron johnson saying he has text messages through june. then to the end of that month. so again, conflicting information. it demands answers. we have to correct conflicting information. the president of the united states is going to allow the release of this memo if the intelligence committee holds a vote. the intelligence committee in the house has done a fantastic job under the leadership of devin nunes. the report is out that the president would reject the release that memo are false. i would have every confidence he would allow it to enter the public square. when you pair this memo which i have read with the missing five months of text messages, the overlay of that time line is very interesting and tells quite a story, martha. >> martha: to fill everybody in, what you're discussing now is the four-page memo that was brought out by the house judiciary committee that shows the evidence from the investigation and released to the entire congress, correct? >> it was released to all members. interesting though, democrats have actually boycot

this, but the department of justice, your department of justice, the inspector general, michael horowitz, has just released a letter saying they found a lot of these text messages, and there was a glitch, apparently, not just on the samsung smartphones for these two individuals, but thousands of smartphones provided by samsung. they seem to have discovered how that glitch occurred. they've retrieved a lot of those messages. the president was angry about it, wanted to know where those messages were, and now they've discovered, at least so far, a lot of those messages and more are on their way. what's your reaction to this late-breaking development? >> well, i am not familiar with all the facts, but it's good that they have recovered some of those messages. what's important is what is in those messages and do they reveal political bias? this agent, peter struck, was already removed from the case over the summer because of political bias he had shown months ago. now there are months of text messages that had gone missing and now seem to have been recovered. we'd like to see what's in them a

but now michael horowitz, the inspector general, says that using forensic tool, quote, this week we succeeded in using these tools to recover the text messages including the messages between strzok and page received between december 16 and may 2017. he says they will share them with the congress. so they're missing no more. >> pieete, how many text messag are there? >> i would assume hundreds. they were prolific texters, texting back and forth all the time. and what the justice department's been doing is turning these over, the ones they believe are relevant, to their investigation. quote here, that members of congress has raised, is that these two folks at the fbi had many messages critical of donald trump and supportive of hillary clinton and they want to know whether that in any way colored either the investigation of the hillary clinton e-mail matter or the special counsel's investigation of russian election meddling. what the department has done is given them any texts that they believe are recent and excluded personal texts so i don't know how you count it, the total or re relevant ones
