cheryl: well bankrupt twinkie maker hostess brands are even more trouble as thousands of its workers are on strike. dennis neal is talking with gregory rayburn. dennis: the ceo of hostess is here to announce they are now closing permanently three of the 36 plants as a direct result of this strike. thanks for joining us, mr. rayburn or greg. first of all, you have told me previously that you will shut down this entire company if the unions strike because you guys are trying to get out of this bankruptcy. are you sticking to that threat? >> well, you know, i've never said it as a threat. you know, i have always said it as a consequence. you know the business could not withstand any significant material work stoppage or strike. we said that our unions. our teamsters supports the plan. we have said if you go out on strike, we would likely have to wind down the business. >> you are closing plants permanently. are you doing this as retaliatory measure to show you mean business or does this mean you can't operate them? >> we don't have the manpower to cover all 36 bakeries. the bakers called

it's a surprise not only to those of us who grew up with these brands but to those employed at hostess brandsecause they all learned today that most of them will be losing their jobs. the company says it's trying to sell off brands and lick with which date the company, firing all the employees and doing this because of a general strike declared. this is interesting because this is not a clear cut line of management versus the unions. there are 12 different unions at hostess brands and most unions agreed with the company to go along with the cuts they were asking for in terms of pay cuts that amounted to 4% over the next four years of the contract. they were looking at pension cuts and at work changes so trucks could take more than just bread, but bread and cupcakes at the same time. they were going to get a 25% ownership, $100 million in debt from the newly formed hostess brands but it was the bakers union that represents about 30% of those employees that refused to go along be a went on strike. this is a very different situati situation. the teamsters had signed off on the situation. it make

very quickly try to find homes for as many brands as we can. >> let me ask you about finding a home. if hostess is sold as an entire company or even parts of the company sold, will a buyer take the company with the union intact, or are you talking about selling these brands nonunionized? >> well, you know, we historically tried to sell the company as a whole. that never worked because of the contracts, because of the multiemployer pension plan liabilities, because the plants are fairly antiquated. there hasn't been a sufficient investment in those plants over the last decade. that was an unsuccessful process. we also tried to find equity investors to fund a turn around. that was unsuccessful because of the potential pension liabilities. so at this stage, you know, we're going to sell to whoever is going to put the best deal on the table. that could be a strategic that has his own production or a strategic that needs a plant. we'd like to find homes for our employees to the extent we can get them rehired and in conjunction with those brand sales then i think that would be fantastic. but it reall

came and went with no sign of an end to the union strike at hostess brands. will the company now begin to lick q li liquedate and lay off employees? i spoke with the ceo. >> we asked for an 8% year one wage cut but we asked for it across the board, management, nonunion, everyone in the company has taken an 8% cut. that comes back up starting in year two. and i works out over the five-year contract to be a 4% cut in wages across the board, all employees. we cut back -- we tried to move the union employees closer to what we pay nonunion for health and welfare. and we certainly cut back on our pension contributions to the multi-employer pension plans. there have been no demands from the bakers. they decided they didn't like the deal. i can't imagine a scenario where they would get a better deal than the other 13,000 employees that we have. that makes no sense. i think there are some who think they've been misled. i think some think we're going to come back to the bargaining table. that's misleading. there's nothing else to bargain over. and there's an element th
