young women from [inaudible] the midwest, and the barbizon hotel is a new york hotel but it is a very american story because the women who stayed there are not new yorkers. they become new yorkers to some extent, but they are from small town america, and the modelling agency also sort of caters to this sort of -- these are their models and the look they are going for, sort of all american and so forth. and they stay. they also stay at the barbizon. this segues into the 40s and 50s where there's a big agency, a female-run agency, and she also sends models over there. then a really interesting sort of connection for me when doing research, a real entry point for me as a scholar, and also an entry point to the barbizon for women was madamezoile magazine. which in the 80s, i remember that magazine as a not really good teen fashion magazine. again, it has this remarkable history. it started in the 1930s, run by women. it was known as a bible for every college girl. in the early 1940s, mademoiselle magazine, it was a way to bring the creme de la creme of young women, have them stay at the b

these hotels were residential hotels which were all about the opulent experience in terms of common roomsut with four actual bedrooms so these were seen in the decade from men and women wanted them to. in fact these hotels were booked solid before they were built. that was how huge the demand was for them and one of the key things was that they had no kitchens. they didn't have kitchens because it made it easier to build these places but the notion of not having a kitchen was fundamental to its identity for women who are coming which worry if you did not have to cook meaning he also did not have to take care of the household, then you could live the life that you want to live. at the same time when it opened its doors in 1928 it had a modern twist but it has this veneer of being a really elite place. what happened because the crash happened a year after it opened its doors the barbizon continued to advertise itself as a place that was a safe haven for the lead respectable young women on the go society women. it continues that way. it pivoted and that was also interesting. looking at the w

once the hotel was up and running, trump posted that the hotel was a huge financial boon for his business. he said he made more than $150 million off that hotel during his presidency. but based on financial reports obtained by the committee, they say trump's dc hotel actually lost more than $70 million during the course of his presidency. we also learned from the committee today about the existence of a sort of inexplicable and until now, secret multimillion dollar favor paid to the president from a foreign owned bank called deutsche bank. in order to actually turn the old post office into a luxury hotel, trump's business borrowed $170 million from deutsche bank. under the terms of that loan, trump was due to start repaying the principal of that loan in 2018. but look what the committee found out. quote, in 2018 the terms of the loan were changed to allow trump to did he ever any principal payments on the loan by six years. under these revised terms deutsche bank allowed the trump hotel to make just interest payments for an additional six years and delayed any principal payments to 2024.
