peter hotez, professor and dean of tropical medicine at baylor college of medicine.action to this change in strategy by the incoming biden administration? do you agree with it? >> well, i'm certainly all for increasing the number of americans who get vaccinated. after all, we've failed on every other aspect to attempt to do -- to enact covid-19 control measures. this is all we have left is to vaccinate our way through this. so, we need to increase the number of americans who get vaccinated. the problem is, you know, we have to remember that a single dose of either the pfizer vaccine or the moderna mrna vaccine doesn't do very much. it does not induce much in the way of virus-neutralizing antibodies, which is how all of these vaccines work. what really happens, in some individuals it works, and in others, you don't get much of a response at all. as long as it's recognized that we absolutely have to follow up that first dose with a second dose, it's okay. i'm just worried people may get the wrong dose saying, hey, it's okay to walk around with just a single dose, becau

peter hotez, he is the co-director of the center for vaccine development at texas children's hospitaltropical medicine at baylor university. i want to start right there. joe biden wants to vaccinate 100 million people in his first 100 days. is that possible? is it a realistic goal? >> well, we have to make it a realistic goal, stephanie. that's all we have left. you know, we've squandered every opportunity to control covid-19 in 2020 and so now we're backed into a corner. all we have left is to vaccinate our way out of it and, you know, we did an analysis with the university of new york to find we need to vaccinate three quarters of the american people, that's 240 million americans, say, by the end of august. when you do the back of the envelope calculations that's around -- with two-dose vaccines that's 2 million americans every day. so, yeah, that's what we have to do. and we don't have the infrastructure in place right now, so not much was done to create that infrastructure, we're going to have to expand additional vaccination sites, we have to stream line guidelines, make them les

hotez said something similar and if i understand you correctly, the timeline of having 300 million americansearly fall is based on the vaccines approved now and it seems to me what you're saying is there may be more vaccines that change that equation. is that what you're saying? johnson & johnson or another one? >> yeah, that's right. johnson & johnson, novavax, and astrazeneca, which is already authorized in other countries. we have many kind of different manufacturers who had all been part of operation warp speed in some way who actually kind of worked together and we have now kind of, you know, several candidates in line. i think that going back to what mara said, though, yesterday, you saw adults in the room who were just talking about, here's the facts, here's what we know, we don't understand kind of why there was a stockpile and not a stockpile, but yes, there are more manufacturers, data -- johnson & johnson believes they should have data available this next week, so this is after that, about a couple of weeks, we expect to see if the data is positive, an fda emergency use authorizat
