. >> but peter hotez hasn't been dead wrong, not dead wrong now. you don't have to be a doctor to see this, right? the fact that the delta variant's more transmissible, mass vaccination helps slow its spread but if people are congregating as if the disease was gone and if they're not vaccinated, greater vaccination rate received at least one dose than we do, today the country reported more than 42,000 new cases. that's a lot but thankfully less than 50 deaths. that's the one good news in the u.k. and very important than a lesson here. even as cases have spiked the death numbers are nowhere near what they would be without the vaccine. that's because people older than 65 are the most vaccinated group in the u.k. and the age group most susceptible to dieing from covid. that's the hope here. i mean, i don't think we should see anything like we have seen in previous waves of this pandemic because thankfully by and large the most vulnerable americans are vaccinated. that's not totally comprehensive. there are still people immunocompromised, can't get the

hotez?arly in the delta epidemic but everything i can see, it doesn't look like this virus is selectively targeting children. it just so many people, unvaccinated individuals are getting delta that children are getting swept up along with it, and i think this is going to make things very difficult as the school year opens. i mean, especially in areas where there is low -- not a lot of people vaccinated. so for instance, here in the south, many southern states, fewer than 20% of adolescents are vaccinated. very small percentages of young adults. i means it's a very vulnerable population in schools, and we have some governors that are saying no mask mandates for the school. so, you know, it's hard to see how that will go well in some of the southern states. up in the northeast where most adults and adolescents are vaccinated, i think things could go much better. >> dr. o'neil coming from another southern state with a lower vaccination rate, dr. fauci says he won't be surprised if schools consi

peter hotez about the mask guidance first to meg tirrell the cdc's recommendation applies to well most of the country, right? >> yes, it does, shep. the cdc is making this guidance for areas with substantial or high transmission. take a look at this map. that's all the counties in red and orange all together it's almost two-thirds of all counties in the united states. it's ametric based both on the spread of covid, how many people have the virus, as well as whether counties are able to do enough testing to stay on top of it the cdc also saying that fully vaccinated people who aren't in hot spots might still want to mask indoors if they or someone they live with are at higher risk of severe disease or kids under 12 who can't yet be vaccinated white house press secretary jen psaki was pressed on the cdc's about-face and said even though the previous guidance was two months ago things changed rapidly. >> the reality is we're dealing with a different strain of this virus than we were even earlier in the spring, back in may, when the masking guidance was done, provided by the cdc at that ti

hotez, this is your sort of joint mission. to us nondoctors how this virus would surge through our country and our comments, but you have also been warning from the very, very beginning about the dangers of disinformation, especially once there was an abundance of vaccine supply. what do we do now? >> that's right, nicolle. it is very sad. i have been a vaccine scientist for almost 40 years and have been fighting anti-vaccine aggression for about 20 years or 23 years, and now it has accelerated. the game changer is over the last year or the last few years, the anti-vaccine movement has adopted this political component to it, that somehow -- that being part of the extreme right or the far right requires you to wage a war of aggression against science and scientists. we have seen this at the cpac conference over the last few weeks. we have seen their claim that vaccines are nothing more than a political instrument of control or they're going to take away -- or use it to take away our guns. as ridiculous as it sounds, unfortunate

peter hotez from texas children's hospital. nice to see you, doctor. you've been watching the science you're against the booster shot, at least right now. what brings you to that conclusion? >> well, you know, pamela, i think we ultimately will need to give a third immunization, i've been saying that all along. we will need to give that booster. what that booster will do is jack up virus neutralizing antibodies to a high level and create more resilience against the variants. that's important because we've done a terrible job at vaccinating the african continent and south america. but the way this press release was done, i don't think we need it for the delta variant and i don't think we necessarily need it now. so that's what's so confusing and what the basis for it is, they cited some israel data showing low levels of protection against symptomatic illness. but protected well from serious illness and the numbers were better coming out of england, scotland and canada. i think that's the basis for the -- i don't want to call it a rebuke but the counter

peter hotez. you heard tom's report, rising numbers? japan, but still comparative low, but pair that with a low vaccination rate and this delta variant. does this move make sense to you? >> it makes no sense to have the olympics right now, for a number of reasons. first of all, the percentage in japan that's been vaccinated is extremely low, 15% fully vaccinated, far less than half the rate of the united states. for instance, the delta variant is ascending, so places the japanese people at risk. remember, as good a job as we've done in the united states and parts of canada and western europe and the nordic countries, that's about it. we have athletes coming in from all over the world. so this is going to create this crucible of covid-19. i don't see how this goes well it would have been better to canceled, or at least -- the problem is japan needed help. the world did not offer the help. if the world wanted olympics, all hands on deck, they would have ensured that -- nobody really kay to the aid of japan. that's part of the problem. >>

peter hotez, dean of school of tropical medicine at baylor. with younger, unvaccinated patients, are we at risk of hospitals overwhelmed or challenged in areas with low vaccination rates? >> that's absolutely right, garrett, this is what we're going to see, a surge across the south as many of us predicted. places with a one-two punch, high levels of delta variant and low vaccination rate, and as you report, the character of the epidemic and surge in the south will look somewhat different. won't have as many older individuals, many of them are vaccinated, but the defiance around vaccination is occurring among young people, parents of adolescents. so this is what we're going to see. even though the death rate may not be as high, we'll see a lot of devastating illness, icus are filling up across the south. it is heartbreaking because none of the hospitalizations have to happen. almost all of these hospitalizations are preventable. >> let's talk about the study suggesting johnson & johnson vaccine may not be as effective against the delta variant.

hotez, i want to give a minute here. what would you like to see the cdc head, how would you like to see her communicate to the country this change right now? because, you know, look, there are some people that want to play politics with this, those folks are always going to be there. but there is confusion here. how would you like to see this addressed? >> i think we have to recognize that this is not a 30 second unicef commercial. we have to give it time to explain. it is nuanced, it is detailed. it requires going a little bit into the virology. and i think part of the problem with the communication from the federal government, and this goes back to last year, they still want to treat american people leak they are in the 4th grade or 6th grade and don't understand that the american people are willing to tolerate a level of because their loves depend on it. go through it, this is where we were, here is what has changed with the delta variant, here is what could go wrong, here is what happens if we don't do that. and i th

peter hotez from texas children's hospital and dean of the national school of tropical medicine at bayloru make of all this talk about a booster shot? is it too soon, or should the u.s. be more aggressive here? >> i think it's a complicated picture, but it goes something like this, jeff. we will likely at some point need a third immunization of the vaccination, a third mrna vaccine, yet another boost. that may be it for a while. the reason is because as good a job as we're doing overall in the u.s., we've done a terrible job in africa and latin america and southeast asia and given new variants an opportunity to arise and emerge. so by giving that third immunization we'll have higher levels of virus neutralizing antibody. i've been saying for all of 2021 so far we'll likely need a third immunization i would imagine next year. that's point one. the confusion, i think, is the press release from pfizer that says we need that third immunization because of the delta variant. that's not necessarily so. it looks like the two immunizations for most people are quite rbust against the variant. over
