we are the white house historical association after all. washington is only one of the 45 presidents who did not live in the white house but he selected the sites, the young architect, james hoben, who built the white house. did he ever see the white house? did he see it once it was finished? >> he saw it once on his way back, after he was leaving the tosidency, heading back mount vernon from philadelphia. we know he stop and saw it on his way. i don't think he went inside, but he did see it. that was as close as he would get. but what i tell people today even though washington didn't live in the white house. i mean, he had his hands in just about every facet of the building's design, the planning, the execution. the selection of the architect, the plan. washington was a pretty intense micromanager. he was very involved every step of the way, so even though he didn't live there, it is a the homeative of what of the american head of state should be. >> of course, there's the portrait and the east room but other images and references to washin

hotel is decorated with political cartoons and is featured in the journal of the white house historical association. even the coasters are updated with current political caricatures. we spoke with the vice president and general manager hans bruland and matt wuerker about the artwork on display. >> the hotel was built in 1928 on the site of the residences of john hay and henry adams. and after the family relinquished their rights to the site, in 1926, the developer built this hotel along with the cardinal hotel and the st. regis. the hotel has been in existence since 1928. this bar has been in existence somewhere starting in the '60s or '70s. with my arrival in 1999, this bar was known as off the record, a place to be seen but not heard. and it was not in this color and format and layout, but it was pretty much the same bar in the basement of the hotel, and it's kind of like the speak easy place and it has become very popular over the years. the decorations are political cartoons that are displayed from various artists dating back to a collection of atwood. we keep some of the original artwork still

the cartoons are featured in the white house historical association. herblock's career stood years. sarah duke talked about his influence and legacy and showed us many of his cartoons and many on exhibit in the gallery. >> herb block was a midwestern cartoonist and began his career in 1929, six months before the great depression. he was a moderate conservative and not left, left, and it pushed him more to the center by the great depression and the injustice of world war ii. in 1933 he joined the scripts howard company and the enterprise association which was situated in cleveland, ohio and then in 1946, right after the second world war he joined the washington post where he spent the rest of his career and he died about six weeks after his last cartoon appeared in the washington post. his last cartoon appeared on august 26, 2001, and he died just a week shy of his 92nd birthday in october. the library of congress has the herb block collection. we have 14,360 of his editorial cartoons and we have nearly all of the work he produced for kwaet the washington post." he did give cartoons
