paul: they did not have house of cards in the first quarter of this year which they had last year and able to grow subscribers. for someunts subscriber changes q1 to q2 but long-term they have a diversified portfolio of programming that they acquired from existing media companies, plus more and more original programming that has proven for the most part to be quite successful for their metrics. we do not have nielsen ratings to see how successful the programming is, but some have been very successful. alix: do you know anyone who doesn't watch house of cards? david: but they have to pay for it, pay for these expensive programs. paul: there are two numbers they focus on, the long-term program liability which is over $15 billion for netflix. that is something they have to grow into over the next four to six years. the next is their cash burn current year. they predicted negative cash flow of approximately $2 billion this year and if you look at the bloomberg terminal it does not look like they will be free cash flow positive until 2020. david: the great thing about broadcast television

they probably will in the second quarter because they have two of their biggest all-time hits, "house "house of cardsand ora the new black returning for new seasons. but the fact is that reed hastings will spend almost $7 billion this year, this calendar year on content. another billion on marketing that content. he's trying to alleviate the fact that they are hitting the ceiling in terms of growth in the u.s. right now. actually amazon prime has more subscribers than netflix does. and zero return because you sign up for amazon on a yearly basis. there's a significant turn fact their is bothering the management at netflix. >> it seems investors are willing to give them carte blanche to spend that money, as long as they can bring the subscriber growth. international numbers for this quarter lower, 3.53 million. that's the big disappointment. that's the growth driver, right? >> absolutely. they slowed down internationally. the big untouched market is china. and the irony is that netflix content, all of their big hit shows are being streamed for free on pirate sites and they do license screening network

the next steps in series, "house of cards" in particular. ining up the comment -- content to draw in these new subscribers? >> obviously netflix has made , substantial investments in terms of developing their own, original content. in general, investors looking up the value of netflix just based on what the previous quarter subscriber acquisition was is a missed opportunity. if we look at the ways they can still monetize the audience, regardless of if they get new subscribers things like branded , content, merchandise off of new original content they own, i think there is more diversification and opportunity to monetize audience for netflix other than whether they get 5 million or 4.5 million subscribers. caroline: that is interesting. greg, should we be shifting our attention away from subscriber growth and looking at other numbers? before i ask you to dig into expenses, should we be looking at areas of opportunity to grow? >> that's one thing i expect to hear more of going forward, what their innovation platform is. because the concept of t

netflix said they did not have the big production like "house of cards" this order to boost membershipt net profits were up. when they do not have a new show, it looks like a tech company. when they do have a new show, it looks like a media company. investors do not quite know what to make of it. caroline: netflix seems to be a bit of amazon in that it does splurge for flute -- future revenue. did anything stand out in terms of this week's earnings? >> a little stubble hurts a lot in a company valued at $60 billion. for a media company, that is a huge valuation. netflix is a conventional media company that figured out the internet earlier than the others. the others are figuring out the internet. in my opinion long-term, you're probably going to see netflix seem more in conjunction with companies like time warner and han compareddisney t to facebook or google which has been its history up to now. isoline:'s price to earnings 187 according to the bloomberg terminal. that is something to keep an eye on. let's talk about f8. that really captured the imagination in silicon valley. we heard
