the house of representatives are more specifically the republicans in the house of representatives areing a speaker than they were two weeks ago. so with billions of aid for ukraine and israel on the table waiting for their consideration, with americans literally dying, house republicans did what your boss would no doubt let you do if you were way behind on crucial projects. they took the weekend off. with at least seven members now saying they'll put their names forward, the speaker of the conference will reconvene tomorrow night with the speaker candidate forum with a possible vote on tuesday. back with me now is former res republican congresswoman liz cheney. what has it been like to watch this fiasco play out over the last few weeks? >> it's hard to describe. i wish that it were surprising. you know, what we've seen is a result of really the leadership decisions that kevin mccarthy made all of the way back after the 2020 election and certainly after january 6th and you know, looking the other way in the face of the kind of assault on our democracy that we've seen from donald trump

who said, former house republican, who has been in situations like this, who said, you know, if it was just a handful, maybe jordan could do it. it looks so much harder now as the numbers go up. ashley, i know that that could be the case, but again, people could be looking at this saying i'm just going to vote the way i want to right now. but a lot of these members that we're talking about are republicans who people in your party and the democratic party think that they can beat and take the majority back in 204. >> yeah. i mean if this number was a handful, i would feel better as jim jordan. this is much larger than anyone suspected, and the -- it is a presidential year and we were talking earlier about in midterms a vote like this, some folks could think it would really matter. here's the thing, in the 18 districts that biden won but are held by republican congress people, some of those are in states where you don't run very large presidential campaigns, like a new york, like a california. >> or nebraska. >> or nebr

the issue here is that house republicans are going down a path they know won't become law. to that point, there was difficulty and they withdrew their ask of funding the department of agriculture and other agencies. they were having difficulty getting enough people to support it speaker mccarthy said don't worry, this won't become lost said don't worry about voting for it. if part of the issue is that the bill they are calling for was extreme. the ag bill is an example and it would ban pharmacies from selling the most common abortion drug while simultaneously cutting a program that helps poor, pregnant women and newborn infants for food. it's only healthy food. it's called wic. this bill would really cut back and underfund this program that helps poor pregnant women and newborns get food. it's a pretty extreme measure. things like that are littered throughout these bills. that's why they won't become law. host: you said this and you may have reference it already -- can you elaborate on that? guest: any congress can do anything as long as it's constitutional. the appropriati

i think there's a lot of support amongst house republicans for the speaker. >> practically, how doest work? how do you keep enough republicans together, and how do you make sure in the next several days strategically, that matt gaetz is not successful? >> i think we're already there. i think you saw that in the initial 15 votes for speaker. we had 200, or just over 200 house republicans that been waiver with their support for speaker mccarthy. i think you'll see the same thing, i think even more, probably. because what people understand is if you just derail the speaker, we derailed the house republican agenda. and that's what the most important thing is, the agenda under this speaker and under house republicans that we're doing on behalf of the american people. so, i think there's already that support there. you know, i don't know how the democrats would vote. that's up to them. and i don't even want to make any assumptions about that. but i think there's support amongst house republicans to keep the speaker the speaker. >> and if you talk to some, there's a fair amount of frustrati

house republicans should have worked with us from the very start. instead, they spent weeks entertaining the most extreme ideas from their far right. spending the last week voting on really extreme appropriations bill that would not even actually have averted a shutdown. appropriations bills that would deny our servicemembers the ability to get reproductive care they need in emergencies, severely restricting women's access to medication abortion in every state. bills that would decimate rural communities, eliminate essential resources for our diplomats abroad, and so much more. then, just yesterday, they proposed an across they've boar% cut to virtually all domestic spending. they wanted to gut funding come monday for child care, support for k-12 schools, law enforcement, heating assistance for families on tight budgets, air traffic controllers, lifesaving cancer research and much more. even that proposing apparently wasn't enough for the most extreme members of the house republican conference, and it went down in flames. but let's not forget, and i

the house is scheduled to reconvene at noon eastern time with republican congressman mike johnson intending to seek a full floor vote after becoming his party's latest nominee for house speaker last night. but it is very unclear if he has the 217 votes needed to win the gavel. the louisiana lawmaker was nominated just hours aft majority whip tom emmer of minnesota dropped out. emmer had defeated johnson and several other candidates earlier in the day. but emmer then withdrew from the race just hours later when it became clear he didn't have enough support to win a floor vote. as for congressman johnson, he's the fourth nominee for speaker since kevin mccarthy's ouster three weeks ago. he currently serves as the gop conference vice chair. now, as far as emmer's demice, well you can guess who's taken credit. yep, former president donald trump. he said he's responsible. he took to social mia yesterday to attack emmer less than two hours after he became the speaker nominee calling the minnesota lawmaker, quote, a globalest rino and totally out of touch with republican voters. a source tells nbc

the governing majority in the house are democrats and a minority of republicans. i hope that mccarthy is going to be good on his republic to bring ukraine supplemental funding bill before the house. because, what we know is that it has the majority in the house, it's the commanding, easy majority of members who would support continued funding for ukraine, and my worry is, is that if we wait until the middle or end of november to have this conversation about whether we are still supporting ukraine, it may be too late for ukraine by that point. so, my preference is, in the next few weeks to bring a supplemental funding bill between the senate, than that over to the house, and really dare mccarthy to make the, decision to abandon ukraine, even though he has the majority of republicans and democrats will support ukraine. >> are you worried at all of this potential threat to his speakership could make him put pause on the idea of bringing up the supplemental funding bill that has been rumored to be considering? >> i am concerned by the fact that, when it came down to it
