howard athletic have had a history of ncaa problems. last season, eight teams were penalized for poor classroom performance and in 2008, 26 football players missed the season opener and 19 sat out the second game because of eligibility issues. and the parole ma'am was under -- program was under fire because of eligibility violations in 1991. so certainly there's a long history of troubles with howard university athletic programs. and the ncaa. however, still lots of unanswered questions at this point. however, we do know from the school spokesperson that this year's suspensions are indead temporary. we're told that if the students repay the money, they may be allowed back on the field. we'll somewhere much more on the developing story throughout the day as we learn more about what will happen to the future of the athletic program and the students here at howard. back to you mike. >> all right, delia goncalves live at howard university this morning. >>> we could hear later today from the department of education about what's going on with

sherry ly is live at howard with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. howard university initially took some extreme measures saying it was suspending all of its sports competitions and then it backed off saying it is now only removing some of the student athletes from participation. the university isn't being specific on the whys but students are telling fox 5 it has to do with the misuse of textbook vouchers. howard university took the self- imposed action citing possible violations of ncaa rules. howard's teams will continue to compete but a number of student athletes have been removed from competition penning the investigation. the reaction from students on campus, shock, disbelief and anger. some student athletes worry anything against the university could mean loss of their scholarship. >> the university does give book vouchers to students who enter need of books and some people choose to use the book vouchers for the correct thing. others don't. most do. >> reporter: it is unclear how many student athletes have been affected by the investigation s
