wayne frederick, president of howard university. dr.spond to this? thanks for being with us on this victorious week. you and i know all too often black academics have been lured to predominantly white institutions because that's where the bulk of resources went in terms of endowments and, quite frankly, the presumption of prestige. but this week's news that howard will now have two of the nation's leading thinkers on race in tenured positions, they're success made possible in part by some $20 million in philanthropic funding. it's what your students might call a flex. how does howard university and the rest of hbcu family capitalize on the attention tat when many of the institutions are still struggling to get resources that they do? >> yeah, well, you know, it's a good week for black america. for too long i think we have tried to allow other people to dictate who we can be and who we will be and who we are. and the reality is that we are a community of scholars, a community of excellence, and we have to demonstrate that. and i think th

how did you decide to go to howard instead?> you know, there were basically three pivotal moments in my decision. one, i spent some time looking at the resumes of the members of the board of trustees who felt that they were better qualified than the faculty and the peer reviewers at the university of north carolina to determine that i was not worthy of tenure. and i really decided that i didn't want to be in a position where political appointees would have any say over my career or my life again. and then of course there was the largest donor to the school, the university of north carolina, walter huntsman, who we found out in the last six week had been lobbying against me privately and then who went on kind of a national speaking tour to castigate me as a journalist publicly. and his name is on the school. it became very difficult for me to believe i could maintain my dignity and work at a school with his name on it. then there was the kind of third nail in the coffin, the board of trustees waited until the last possible day,

they have moved locations, fremont, howard terminal, they say, is the end of the line. do the fans get the frustration? some of them may have been 20 if they're 40 now when this whole thing started. >> reporter: absolutely, they're frustrated. listen. the coliseum, we know it's old, but this is a part of bay area history. as far as accessibility goes, i spoke to fans coming in all the way from sacramento, as far as the accessibility of this site, it does not compare when you're talking about the howard terminal ballpark projected arena, proposed arena, rather, where there's still a lot of questions that need to be answered as far as the public infrastructure goes >> how do you get there, too. >> reporter: and b.a.r.t., how do you get there. exactly. there's a lot of a's fans who are still clinging onto the hope that maybe they can work on some kind of deal to redevelop this area, because, as you can see, look at all this tailgating space. are you not going to find all this space for a professional sports team and for fans to come out and enjoy the game and be around oth

i am a howard university alumnus.t should happen next as it related to dean rashad. in the entertainment community, are we seeing a division? are we seeing people come out, not with statements like we saw from cosby, to support her? >> not really to be perfectly honest. what we have seen across all of the spectrum in the entertain m industry is a rebuke of what bill cosby was convicted of, rebuke of the over turning of his sentence even though it was not said he did not do this. the courts did not say you were innocent. the court said it was a technicality so they over turned the conviction. what you have seen on the whole, there may be a couple of outliers but what you have seen a a full throated rebuke of this entire situation. >> yeah. it felt as if she missed the four years of the metoo movement. her tweet in support of her friend was just so tone deaf that we'll see. she says she's now going to do some active listening and take sensitivity training on the campus. it's interesting to hear that the campus is divide
