howard: right.but you've been covering it for a long time, your show has been covering it for a long time. they're now just picking it up. they should have picked it up two years ago, three years ago. the border's a horror show and so many other things. it's not only what they report, it's what they don't report. they don't report certain things that are so big, i expect the look and see the cbs evening news or nbc or abc, and i turn on and they have nothing about very important subjects. that's fake news also in its own way. howard: would you be willing at this point to stop calling national news organizations the enemy of the people? >> well, you know, i have that a lot. i get a lot of people they don't say fake news, they don't mind that as much. they really don't like enemy of the people. i would be honored to do that if they would do it right, if they would -- you know, they're like the policemen or policewomen, they're like the police. and, frankly, they keep our country honest in a certain wa

howard: yeah.'s an absurd thing to ask. and for people who are at level of wealth, the idea that they're going to turn around especially in this corporate real estate market and come up with that type of cash overnight is just absurd. and i think that one of the things that, you know, really is going to come out of this is just him being with able to appoint one more example of they're unfairly targeting me. frankly are, again, we've talked about this before, but what i think that democrats underestimate is that there's a large portion, perhaps a larger portion of the population than they think who voted for donald trump in 2016 and then voted for joe biden in 20202. and every time -- 2020. and every time they go down this road of saying you should not be able to vote for this man whether it's through the ballot access or through the different cases that they're going after him, it sends a message to those independent or swing voters, hey, wait a minute, i voted for this guy before, i should be abl

howard.since the release of the publication, have steps been taken to ensure federal agents are trained on how to responsibly use facial recognition technology? dr. howard: we aren't aware of any changes as a result of the report. it does not mean to have not occurred. we have just not been able to follow up the agency. sen. padilla: what recommendations do you have the senate, the committee, to congress to advance this? dr. howard: one important feature of facial recognition is the need to test and verify accuracy of the democratic -- demographic biased. that is what nesta does in its testing, but not every algorithm, just the algorithms submitted to it. one possibility is to require algorithms to be tested through an independent third-party like nist if they will be used for federal law enforcement purposes. if you are using the best tools, can and ever still occur? of course. human beings make many errors. many of the most publicized errors with forensic algorithms have been traced back to

howard.what steps are being taken to assure the defendant in public are aware of when ai is being used in criminal investigations? >> part of a polyoxyethylene kluber transparency would have a scenario if it was revealed outgrows use one form or another. to speak to mr. aiken this point, ai is often what we now think of as automated technologies was originally considered a i. most people call ai now as machine learning, which is trained on training data. we believethat transparency step should be known. people should be aware when an algorithm is used as part of evidence collection and assessment process. we believe it is very important to validate the results of the message. in this case, the articles i read have not indicated whether any validity testing has been conducted on the reconstruction process for the face. and then, whether those faces can be reliably run through. even the best algorithms, we have not seen any data indicating those have been tested. >> exactly, so there's a whole
