first alert meteorologist howard bernstein here to tell us one day less, but, oh, what a day. >> kind of a transition day monday as we get temperatures into the 30s. today we're low 20s in most spots, but that's still an improvement and in fact, right now we're looking at readings generally in the teens with lower 20s in leesburg, middleburg and lovettsville with not too much wind. the cold spots are like 6 in arlington, 19 in warrenton, but the winds have turned to the south and that's bringing in some slightly warm air. i know it doesn't feel like it, but it is and as the warm air really comes north, it's got a lot of moisture in the mississippi valley. notice the wintery mix of snow, sleet and rain here moving in from illinois, ohio, indiana and kentucky and that's what we're watching because tomorrow as that moisture arrives, not a lot of moisture, but the air and ground is cold enough to have a little freezing rain or light rain. in any event, winter weather advisories go up generally in the afternoon from 3:00 to 9:00. went to 7:00 earlier north and west because even if we went

light freezing rain and from stormtracker 9, i'm meteorologist howard bernstein. back to you. >> most area schools let students out early in anticipation of the wintry weather and many are headed home earlier. that impacted traffic. ellen bryan is keeping her eyes open to monitor conditions on the roads. how are things now? >>> if you are going out about 4:00, the entire beltway was jammed and now, it looks great. the rush hour was much earlier. the only areas with trouble is 95 in bw parkway is a better option better option. there was an accident near route 100 with a vehicle fire on the right-hand side. you will have to slow down before you hit route 32. going northbound on 95, the other area where you see volume is near 95 southbound at the beltway going to gale city with a 14 minute drive time and slowdowns. >>> they said the best tip for driving on the ice is not to do it. if your vehicle slides, there are things you can do. >> if you hit a patch of black ice, what do you do? >> don't panic. ease onto the brake pedal gently. >> turn your tires into the skid.

first alert meteorologist howard bernstein, is out on the weather terrace. when will we break out of this? >> reporter: the good news is it will be frigid tonight and sunday. it is over after that. we start the warming trend on monday. we will get above freezing. we are almost out of this. arctic air is in place. sunshine today, but very dry air. your indoor relative humidity is -like in your house. you may wake up with a dry throat. very cold air. temperatures right now, 17. we got to 21. dulles got to 19. that is a record low high. right now it is zero in oakland and seven above in pittsburgh. with the winds it feels like 16 below in garrett county. for below here in washington. we may have subzero temperatures by tomorrow morning. we have a wind chill advisory until 6 pm on sunday. sunday morning, one is the record to beat. i do not think we will get to five. with the dry air in place in the light winds we will have toward the morning. the winds will die off. we will have some areas called five below by sunday morning. hang in there. we are going to turn

in gaithersburg, somewhere in between, i'm meteorologist howard bernstein from the stormtracker 9. topper, back to you. >> we will take you through the next few hours and 8:00, mainly just rain and points south and east, by 10:00, most of the rein in la plata with temperatures flirting at freezing at 10:00 toward frederick. in the morning, some slick spots with frederick and 32 in hagerstown. widespread ranks with slick spots and by 9:00, we are freezing and 34 in buoy, and by 1:00, almost a heat wave with low to mid-40s across the board and by 6:00, temperatures in the mid-to upper 30s. tomorrow should be a pretty good day. low 30s to start downtown and 46 with sunshine at 1:00. shower possible late and here comes the fall, 54 and on friday, warmer with showers and back to the 60s and it will turn colder over the weekend, with may be a flurry on sunday. >>> i will say howard is absolutely right. watch out for slick spots. on the roads, a lot of people left work early and we are seeing delays south bound on 95 when you are outside the beltway in park way is for traffic leaving d.c.
