howard kurtz is fox news media analyst and has been looking all of them. so sad, i guess, when some of these life and death cases that involve very private decisions wind up being played out in the public forum. is that helpful? >> the keyword there is private, jon. there's a heavy degree of exploitation, i have to say, in the coverage of many of these cases. these are essentially private and personal battles between families and hospitals or doctors. they're very sad, and because they are tear jerkers and especially when children are involved, it makes it great fodder for cable news with constant need for updates, and it turns into this whole national melodrama. jon: well, and sometimes you don't know necessarily all of the information. i mean, the hospital says one thing in the case of jahi mcmath, her family or her lawyer, you know, the family's lawyer will come out and say something completely different. how are the media, how are the viewers supposed to sort it out? >> it is difficult to sort it out, and, you know, anybody watching the case of jahi mc

jon: for more on this topic, let's bring in howard kurtz, host of "media buzz." how are the media going to react to this speech of the president? >> i don't have to gaze very far because you look at the new york times today has an analysis saying not that president obama has radically changed what he said as a candidate about the need to rein in the surveillance state, all candidates go through this and then when they become president, there's this collision between their high-flown rhetoric and the gritty realities of governing. so i don't think the media, jon, are really holding the president's feet to the fire. maybe he's doing the right thing, but the truth is he's trying to occupy a middle ground here between security and terrorism, but he's not doing very much to rein in this massive eavesdropping, and that's not going to satisfy the left. jon: curious to me that in almost every other speech he makes these days, he rails against congress as being a place where decisions can't be made and, you know, the congressional leaders can't be trusted to get this thin

. >>> for top story tonight, joining us from washington howard kurtz and bob goldburg, both are fox news analysts. am i making mistakes here? >> on the factual matter, i completely agree with you. on your theory that if the "new york times" consciously had a pro hillary agenda, i don't know. could be. as you know, bill, there is never a smoking gun memo that says let's hurt the liberals and help the conservatives, but i think the reason so many people think the way you do about this, two reasons, two main reasons anyway. the first reason, on the main conclusion in the 7,000-word "new york times" piece that al qaeda wasn't involved, you're right. there are many responsible people in responsible positions who don't agree with that, and one of those responsible people is a liberal democrat on the house who says al qaeda wasn't involved. >> who's that? >> that was adam ship in california. the second reason is, that "the new york times" has a, let's call it a credibility problem, mainly with conservatives. the paper went easy on barack obama when he ran for president. there's a strong suspici

howard kurtz, the host of media buzz. and my guest in studio. so this is just coming out today. book that will be more about hillary clinton, but in your mind, how much has has been covered as a story. >> it's gotten modest coverage, and hilary's hit list, the political payback. the problem with the excerpt is nobody on hillary's hit list actually got hit. it's nice recounting of all the people that bill clinton and hillary clinton were ticked off at for perceived political slights but i don't see any examples of retaliation. >> when you juxtapose that to the coverage of governor chris christie since bridgegate, how do you see it? >> the christie story exploded because christie is such a larger than life figure, the two-hour press conference. we do see evidence of bayback, not necessary live by the governor but by his aideness creating the traffic night marry in apparent retaliation against a democratic mayor. don't think the average person cares if politicians are sniping or snubbing each other or denying each other votes or jobs. but when there's political road nil the form of

joining us is howard kurtz host of "media buzz" right here on fox.st this scandal, tucker, into the stratosphere holding that two-hour marathon. i don't know about you, i needed a bathroom break after a while. it provided great visuals for the press, everybody is replaying the clips as you just did, as we're going to do lawsuiter this morning, whereas the irs scandal i thought was outrage, more abstract, a newspaper story than suitable for television and when there wasn't a direct connection shown between president obama and the regional cincinnati office it became harder to sustain the storyline. >> it also didn't fit quite the press narrative at the time. the irs story broke when the president was enjoying pretty much unanimous support from reporters, that's changed a little bit about owe bamobamaca. don't you think politics had something to do with that? >> maybe. i used to say chris christie was the media's favorite republican. lot of journalists like him, he's great copy. his pragmatic brand of republicanism appeals to east coast journalists. it

howard kurtz covers the media for us.his is what he writes the question for the christie and media what point does the daily drubbing becomes unfair. he won a re-election in the landslide, makes his aides hard ball tacticses hard to understand. joining me now, howard kurtz, fox news media analyst. e may be those outside the media world that missed it this week, so what really is the story when it comes to this tweet? >> well, this was an outrageous and just really disgusting message posted on the official msnbc twitter account which took a shot at this biracial ad, very nice super bowl commercial involving this biracial family who happens to like cheerios saying, well, you know, the right wing will hate it, but everyone else will say, ah, what a nice family. well, there was this eruption on twitter, jenna, it was really nice, the one silver lining here is that a lot of biracial families who happen to be conservative posted pictures of themselves and not only criticized msnbc, but kind of fought the hate with love in making the point that people who come from these kinds of families or form these kinds of families have all kinds of political views. jenna: you've covered a lot of media controversies, what do you think of the response from msnbc to this tweet? >> you do have to cre
