fox news media analyst howard kurtz is here with whether the story was founded for a case of media hysteria. how did it all come to pass? >> "the washington post" ran a dramatic headline. u.s. officials say the paper said the discovery of the computer code associated with russian hackers reflected a potentially serious vulnerability for america's electric grid. pat lahey called a threat to vermont. the story began short-circuiting. >> the post acknowledge problems with the story? >> slowly. 90 minutes after the piece was posted online the utility said, as we heard, only a single line of malware was found that one laptop not connected to the burlington grid. the post should have waited for the response and they softened the headline. the next day the newspaper acknowledged that the original story incorrectly said russian hackers had penetrated the u.s. electric grid which brings us to the story today that essentially amounts to a complete retractio retraction. >> bret: how much of the original story? >> here's the headline. russian government hackers do not appear to have targeted vermont ut

wrapping up the news conference between prime minister theresa may and president donald trump, howard kurtzs with us to talk about the relationship we have seen this week between the press and the new president. your observations of the news conference, what did you think? >> president trump is often accused, with some justification, plucking message discipline but he was very measured in his first news conference alongside a foreign leader. despite the effort of a couple british reporters to bait him, and they always sound so airtight when they do it, how are you going to possibly get along with our panic to be mack prime minister because you're, how do you reason reassure the rest of the road hitting your dangerous, he got through the news conference without creating a diplomatic incident. >> jenna: it is funny when he turned to the prime minister, this is the first question you have? that is not something that you do not heat see from the leader of the free world. >> humor is good to relieve the tension. >> jenna: i want to point out the obvious, when we have news conferences, it's been

howard kurtz most of media buzz. howard, good morning to you.is very near to you, sean spicer broke news with you on sunday. what is the idea first? >> he did a nice job of making it about the washington elite media and they want to open up the meeting to bloggers, talk radio hosts and others. that's fine. i think this particular plan is a mistake. it can accommodate lots of people withstanding room only. when the initial interest -- there are tl* is a core group of journalists, other folks come in and out and they can come to briefings and ask questions if called upon. >> bill: a room of 49, right? >> 49 seats but -- >> bill: they can move it across the street. the suggestion was that you could get perhaps as many as 600 into a room. which would be intriguing because trump has gone after the media, has characterized the mainstream media as being against him. is the suggestion that if you increase the numbers, howard, that you would bring in those who may see a president trump in a more favorable way? >> i suppose that's possible and i'm all for

howard kurtz, good day to you.record the day after the election i believe i stated that you will be the busiest guy over the next four years. that prediction was true. i don't think you would disagree. >> when you had your special edition in washington shannon asked if there would be a truce to the press and a couple hours later trump said he was at war with the media and spicer delivered his blistering message to media. >> bill: if the new administration is at war with the media as president trump put it, this was a brief truce, go. >> the question is will it last. sean spicer had a very solid at his first official briefing yesterday and the press was pretty well-behaved as well. i had the sense of both sides dialing it down. i've learned during the campaign it's always dangerous to declare a truce with the media in trump world. inevitably a few days or week will go by or there will be another story or media narrative that this president considers to be wrong, unfair. he will take a shot and things escalate. i sta

joining us now howard kurtz and the host of media buzz. s is one of those days that is just epic in broadcast coverage and media coverage because it only happens every four years. the entire world is watching. it's interesting to note how different media outlets have had a different tone this week. >> that is true. you have some outlets that are treating this as the historic eye-popping day it is and others that seem dug in against the trump presidency before it starts. i was so struck by those pibarack obama and his wife welcoming donald trump and his wife to the white house. two men who couldn't be more different and who hold each other in minimal high regard and they're about to sit down for tea. i had a similar feeling yesterday on the air when trump landed in washington instead of getting out of the blue and gold trump jet he got out of a plane that said united states of america on it. next time i see him get on a plane he will give that salute that signals that he is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. the hand-off itself is t
