diplomat. >> it strongly resembles a witch hunt, which we thought were long overdue. >> jenna: howard kurtzs with us. what do you make of that? >> i'm not surprised that president trump would use the word witch hunt, because there is a desperate desire for the democrats to lead somewhere that would reveal some nefarious dealings in his campaign or associates in russia and might even raise questions about the election. at the same time, "the washington post" reported accurately that jeff sessions had had these two conversations with russian ambassadors during the campaign and it didn't exactly own up to that. when he testified and at least as a partial result, he decided to recuse himself from any investigation involving russia and the campaign, so that's not a witch hunt, that's accurate reporting. >> jenna: we are in a time. where there's so much examination of the past and the intention of the press, do you think is a media firestorm that is self crated by the press or as assay media media firestorm over something? >> let's start with the proposition that the media over plays everything.

"usa today" put it on the front page but there's been nothing on the evening news networks. cnn has done a couple morning reports. fox news has covered the case extensively. at at >> bret: what explains the disparity? >> story being fueled by conservative commentators. sean spicer spoke about it at a briefing. bill o'reilly, who has made such crimes a signature issue, said this. >> 40 years of journalism, a story of that magnitude ignored by the national media. we all know why. illegal immigration is a political issue. >> many outlets are drawn to stories that may dramatize a different point involving race or gender. the ferguson shooting or the supposedly gang a rape at the university of virginia. >> bret: we have seen the disparity before. the case in philadelphia, we covered that. didn't get a lot of coverage other places. how do you think these judgments should be made? >> even horrible local crimes like the one at roc

joining me now as howard kurtz, the host of media buzz. what do you about that? a dumb idea for the media. anderson cooper said he mutes the president on twitter. >> melissa: we've got breaking news. sorry to interrupt you. it will go to speaker ryan right now. >> how important it is to repeal and plays obamacare, not just because a lot is collapsing, but because the law is going to get even worse if we do nothing. let me show you what our problem is and what we are trying to do. we are going to repeal in a place obamacare and were going to do it with a three-pronged approach. number one, is what we're talking about now. this is what the committee marked up this morning, what the congress committee is doing right now. that's reconciliation. there are only so many things you can do in that bill because of the senate floor rules reconciliation. you can put everything you want and that legislation because of you dead, it would be filibustered and he couldn't even bring up for a boat in the senate. number two, administered of action. this law, obamacare, has 1,442 in

stuart: he is with us this morning, "mediabuzz" host, howard kurtz.t going to rein in his use of twitter. that is not exactly reading between the lines, either. he is not going to rein it in, is he? >> no way, no how. i agree it is effective way for president trump to get his message out to millions of people and drive the news agenda. the point i'm making with kelly con wray, context has been series of weekend tweets where the president ma unproven chargegainst barack obama being wiretapped. that i think stolen some of the spotlight from the focus on replacing obamacare and other issues that he he is pursuing. stuart: he gets in his own way to some degree. he is fighting himself when he comes up tweet that is not factually accurate. did he get the sense that kellyanne conway might rein in more erratic tweets? >> i actually talked to her about this before. nobody is growing to take the president's twitter away. he is 70-year-old man. you are not grabbing his phone. certainly people around him, know for a fact, urged him not to stop using twitter, stop

howard kurtz, the guy from media buzz. i want to try to synthesize this down.s it was two minutetaken out of a 40-minute interview. the point koppel was making opinion had made its way into a lot of news outlets. i think that is true but i think it is inevitable. what do you say? >> well you know i debated ted koppel on a panel last year and he is absolutely convinced the rise of cable news and this thing called the internet has been bad for journalism and bad for the country, he prefers old days. by logic koppel was using, wasn't saying just you, hannity, opinion shows, he should feel rachel is bad for america. interesting to show he beat up on "hannity" and sean hannity's audience which he seems to think isn't based in fact. stuart: there is subtle opinion involved in any news broadcast, because what do you consider to be news? there is bias involved in what is news? and then there's the way, how do you write the story? who do you quote? who do you not quote? what do you put in and what you don't put in. i think buys has always been there. i think opinion is
