charles: joining us media madness author, howard kurtz.this, notion we could be looking at dangerous backlash? >> i think it is already happening and i have been stunned by all of the vitriol that i have gotten and many others have gotten because i said, you shouldn't harass people, kick them out of restaurants. it is not just sarah huckabee sanders as you know. kirstjen nielsen, homeland security sector, a bunch of protesters came into restaurant shouting shame at her. that is all indicative of polarization in this country. those that don't like administration, president trump he uses rough language, he uses hard ball tactics, when you get down to harassing people that is the word maxine waters used, harassing people in daily lives. it cross as line. i think there is backlash. charles: maxine waters standing by her comments, in fact pushing back against democrat leadership, said listen, on this one waters crossed a line. the folks who believe this is legitimate tactic don't seem to be backing down at all. >> it is interesting, that nancy

stuart: joining us now, howard kurtz. he have he is the media guy at the fox news channel.rogram. >> hey, stuart. stuart: do you think it is legit for news anchors to make those kind of political value judgments on our president's performance? >> i don't think straight news anchors should use words like disgraceful but i do believe president trump gave his critic as lot of ammunition with what many white house officials are privately conceding was a serious set of mistakes at the putin press conference. what makes this difficult, stuart, again i'm not saying anchors should suddenly morph into commentators but they often seem to when they can't contain their animus towards president trump, you have many republicans, many conservatives joining in criticism. i heard a lot of criticism of president in helsinki on fox news channel, fox news network. this is not the usual left-right wrestling match. stuart: that is true. what upset me more than anything is the conflation of meddling in our election, which clearly the russians did, and collusion between president trump and mr. put

howard kurtz is with us. the author of "media madness." o be out there with, in full-scale rage mode no matter what, no matter who the pick is, this is the media in full-scale rage mode. where am i going wrong? >> you're certainly right about the left because we know the four finalists, four appeals court judges, they're all conservative, they're all pro-life. this replaces swing vote anthony kennedy. so the attacks have already begun. in terms of the media you will see exhaustive investigations trying to dig up dirt and contradictions on whoever the nominee that emerges tonight. we've already seen some of that in recent days, stuart. i would suggest that has affected the selection process. stuart: what have you seen recently about digging for dirt? what? >> well the media somehow divined that the two leading candidates were appeals court judge brett kavanaugh here in d.c. and amy coneey barrett in chicago. there is a lot of questions, questioning judge barrett, as a woman, optics might be good for this kind of selection, whether or not her

howard kurtz, host of media buzz and author of media madness, trump, the press and the war over the truthll cover the rumor mill and the lead-up to a scotus pick. are they trying to put their thumb on the scale or playing along with the whisper campaign? >> kind of like waiting for the white smoke when a pope is picked. the press will cover who are perceived to be the leading candidates. in the case of amy coney barrett maybe a little bit of a thumb on the scale. we have a lot of things being written about how this judge is a devout catholic, she belongs to a little-known christian group. would that affect her rulings? in fact, when she was confirmed by the senate for the appeals court in chicago there was a bit of a dust-up between senator feinstein and judge barrett about this very question would she -- who there be some sort of spillover of her personal religious beliefs and many conservative writers saying it is not fair, the press is setting up a religion test. we see the skirmish playing out before the president announced his choice. >> leland: when does the coverage flip from hones
