we're joined by howard safir, the former police commissioner in new york city.ommissioner, good to see you. talking to a lot of people today, it was striking how different the city handled last night. there was still incidents of looting and violence in the night but nothing like we'd seen the night before, the night before that. what changed and, what do you expect from here on out? >> well, the first thing they changed they move the curfew from 11 to 8:00. it was ridiculous to have a curfew of curfew to give three hours of darkness to groups like antifa and other groups organized here. that changed. i also think that the pervasive looting that took place the night before last, finally convinced the mayor who has been orchestrating all of this that he had to do something. so he put more cops on the street which were necessary. then he started using tactics that they should have used from the beginning. for instance, boxing the protesters on the bridge. made sure that those hooligans didn't get into manhattan to cause havoc. the nypd is the best police departmen

jon: howard safir, thank you. deputy has been killed and two officers wound in what is being described as an ambush in northern california. authorities say sergeant damon gutzwiller was shot and killed. reporter: moments ago a vigil was held for the sergeant shot and killed in yesterday's ambush. the santa cruz sergeant was honored at the headquarters. the sheriff describes gutzwiller as a great officer who didn't have a single complaint in service. his wife is weeks away from delivering their second child. and he has a 2-year-old son. >> somebody who truly loves his job and wants to help people. that's what damon was. he was a good man and a good police officer. reporter: someone reported seeing a suspicious van with guns and bomb making materials inside. deputies found the van at a home and were ambushed with guns and explosive. a second deputy was injured. >> another deputy was shot or struck with shrapnel from the bomb and he was also struck by a car the suspect drove out of the driveway. reporter: the suspect

howard safir, the former new york police department commissioner joins us right now. commissioner, what do you want to hear out of the president? >> well, i want to hear what i've heard about the executive order which is addressing things that really have need to be done and needed to be done for a long time. the first one is certification and credentialing. uniform requirement across the country. because right now the requirements from nypd, requirements for a cop in boise idaho are very different. so we need to have uniform standards so we get quality people on to the police forces around the nation. the other one is a database of misconduct because what happens now, you can be fired from one police department and go to another, and even if you were involved in brutalitity or corruption, it is very hard for the other police department to find out. so that is a great thing as well. and having social workers and health professionals accompany police on non-violent cases, makes some sense. neil: you know, commissioner, we're told that, again we don't know the details t

howard safir, just told me, former commissioner of police, with 35,000 police they should not need thenal guard. i was shocked at that it is all about the leadership and what they're allowed to do. they had hadhundred 700 have to be debriefed and interrogated who is buying bricks put in the middle of our streets, they are using as weapons? who is bringing ghost cars in without plates, stop in the middle of the street. they are filled with material to allow these militants to fill up our streets. they're not protesters who want racial justice. they are anti-american activists looking to take down the country and refurbish it in their own twisted image. they're from 18 to 25. they need to be taken down. stuart: i just don't think we quite understand what the rest of america really feels. i think the rest of america, middle america, if you like, richard nixon's silent majority, looking at what is going on in our cities and our sickened and angered. that is what i think they feel. now you're in touch with a lot of people all across the country. is that the feedback that you're getting? >>
