joining us rights now for more in an exclusive interview, starbucks' ceo, howard schultz. ey" studio our own jim cramer. welcome to you both. >> thank you so much. hi, jim. >> hey, howard how are you? >> very well thank you. >> howard let me begin. in the quarter, the same-store sales growth is impressive. what were some of the levers that you pulled that drove that momentum in terms of traffic, in terms of ticket what are you seeing out there from the consumer? >> well i believe this is the strongest non-holiday quarter in our over 20-year public life. so it's pretty incredible to have a 7% comp on our store base is probably unparalleled. but what drove it was 3% traffic globally. 2% traffic domestically. we're seeing a significant level of interest in our new beverage called flat white. the relevancy of starbucks in terms of sense of community, the relationship we're building with our customers in terms of our loyalty program, the ongoing success of mobile order and pay, first in portland oregon and now in 600 stores in the northwest, we're seeing the beginnings of increm

what do you think of howard schultz's decision? >> starbucks is fine. not the biggest fan of the coffee. i think it's odd to describe ferguson as an urban community. ferguson is relatively low density compared to most cities compared to st. louis city proper. and looks more like kind of a typical midwestern suburb. so when i read the press release, my eyebrows kind of raised. >> okay. the choice of words aside, the idea of opening a starbucks in a neighborhood where race has been a central organizing focus not organized but central focus of the national news media, do you think that is a good idea? >> i don't think it's a, it's not bad. agnostic. yeah starbucks is fine. certainly, ferguson could use more outlets for all the reporters that are there. >> i want to ask you guys because i thought the race together initiative was questionable. >> goofy. >> but i do think it is nice that a ceo in america is trying to get his hands around the issue of race and trying to do whatever he can to be part of that conversation. but other people have said this seems s

did howard schultz, the head of starbucks call you? where did the negotiations go? he exciting part of all this? >> president crow of asu met howard through a markel initiative, markel foundation initiative. i remember going into a conference room in president crow's office and we had a phone discussion with the vice president of strategy for starbucks and vice president of public affairs. and, about five days later i was on my way to seattle. liz: wow. >> we sat down with leadership at starbucks. and it was clear that what they were doing at that time to is reviewing schools. they had the idea that education was a 21st century benefit in the same way health care had been important benefit in the 1980s. they were trying to figure out how they could provide that benefit to their employees. i think we had, both organizations, both arizona state and starbucks are committed to a certain vision, on the partf their partners at starbucks. for us, it is about providing access to the maximum number of people we can to begin reversing a trend around adult degree completion in
