one of the things that howard university and howard university hospital has identified was that we have a large population of at-risk drinkers, substance abuse patients, and that we wanted to find a way to try to really help our population. we didn't have enough social workers or frontline people to do it. so what we had done was put together a proposal to train our residents. and samhsa was very helpful in that and provided us with a grant to train our residents and our staff about screening, brief intervention, and referral for treatment. so when a patient comes in on whatever service... they may not have come in for an alcohol or substance abuse problem, but the results of the discussion may have been screening that patient just to see, is this person at risk? and once you have done that, you really go through a process of educating the residents and staff about how you can have open-ended questions, affirmative listening, reflective listening, that really allows a person to open up and tell you what is going on. now we know physicians and health care personnel are very busy, so the

the cultural competency piece is a specific part of our know the risk sbirt program at howard university. we wanted to make sure that people understood that communicating to one group versus another may require some refinement. you may need to know where the people are coming from, what their background is, so we try to incorporate this through a web-based program, education as well as through lectures and didactics and role playing so that the residents actually get a chance to get a understanding. so, when they come and actually talk to the person, they have some sense of history of who this person may be and why they are. and maybe why they don't want to come and seek treatment. and how is that accepted among the folks that have been trained in the sbirt methodology? well, the sbirt methodology has, i would say, taken a great role in not only improving the way they communicate for sbirt but all communication. because they have to learn how to talk with patients of different cultures for many different reasons. it may not just be sbirt that they are talking about, but they take these s

lynn holt had attended high school at howard university during the 1950s, which was a golden age for the institution. this was when thurgood marshall and other lds lawyers had their arguments that they would make at the supreme court at howard law school. imagine how exciting this was to have thurgood marshall and all of these lawyers in the midst especially for someone like lynn holt, who wanted to be a civil rights lawyer. he was right there in the midst. he in an important way, it turned out that he had the privilege of fetching coffee and sandwiches for thurgood marshall and doing a little bit of legal research for those lawyers as well. and imagine being so close to someone whom you admired so much. he was intent on going to work for lds after he graduated from howard. but he did not do that. and why was that? well, because he became very troubled by lds school desegregation strategy, how it played out in prince edward county, virginia. the school board there closed its schools for five years rather than comply with a school desegregation decry. and for all of that time, local ch

this is a picture, 1936, and she is visiting howard university. and the two students on either side are dressed in reserve officer uniforms. now, this picture caused an outcry from segregationists who used it in the south to attack the racial policies of the roosevelt administration. but on the other hand, it made a great hit in the african-american press of the day which would take pictures like this and run them to show that here you had a first lady who really was sympathetic to the cause of african-americans. now, she travels all over the country giving speeches, and some of them definitely paid lectures and some were not. often she is accompanied only by one person, that's her trustworthy secretary, melvina thompson, who's the woman you see there with her. you see the kind of clothes they wore. you know, they sort of looked matronly. women weren't supposed to have to try to keep young the way they are today, no matter how old we actually are. they were expected to dress like older ladies. here she is on airplane. of course, she loved to fly,

in 1947, before the presiding officer or i were ever born, she earned a law degree from howard university law school. during that time period, as one might imagine there really weren't law firms that hired either women or african-americans, much less an african-american woman. so what did frankie freeman do? she decided to open her own law firm. she began her practice with divorce and criminal cases, and with a huge dose of pro bono cases. after two years she became legal counsel to the naacp legal team that filed suit against the st. louis board of education in 1949. in 1954, freeman was the lead attorney for the landmark case davis v. st. louis housing authority, which ended legal racial discrimination in public housing in st. louis. in the almost 60 years since that decision, ms. freeman hasslesly fought for civil rights at home in st. louis and across the nation. she has endured abuse and discrimination but through it all she worked with intellect and dignity while employing one of her very best weapons: a warm and friendly personality and a very quick smile. in 1964, president lyndon

parent looked at me and said, you know, this child that was out there and now is a student at howard university in dental school, that's my son's best friend. i'm not sure talking to you and the fbi is the answer. i think we need to be talking to our children. i was so moved by that that he realized that right there in his own backyard, in his family, you know, it's one of those that could have been my kid. when i look at my friends. in college arrested i think often that could have been me; right? i'm not sure it's unique to the knew wave, but i think the challenge is to know our children. it's not necessarily counterterrorism message, is it? just know what the cirn are doing -- children are doing and be actively and involved in their lives. >> thank you. anything about your community? >> i think that all communities have to be at the table, and i think that when law enforcement meets regularly with the community whether it's an immigrant community or whether it's a nonimmigrant community, when they know the community, when they have contacts in which to evaluate information, when they've, you

[applause] >> thank you. thank you very much. my book was published only five days ago. since then i've done some taping sessions with the nationally syndicated radio shows. this is the first live event, it couldn't happen in a more important place. we are in the johnny appleseed museum. joe besecker was one the first person i contacted after they agreed to public the book, but before i decided to write a word. one the johnny appleseed trustees, arthur humphrey. he has done wonderful research and the church of the jerusalem. i kindly latched -- and i say kindly latch, he might think i was a blood-sucking parasite. i should also add one the problems i face is when to refer to the title character as john chapman and when he is johnny appleseed. johnny chapman is the historical figure and appleseed the myth. that's what i try
