"cnn newsroom" starts right now. >>> we begin this hour in india. the deadly scene at a religious festival after a fireworks display went terribly out of control, starting a huge blaze at a temple. this all happened early sunday morning in the southern state of carola. more than 100 are dead and more than 250 injured after the fireworks explosion and fire. police are charging temple authorities with culpable homicide. it is 1:30 in that part of the world. following these developments, we have more live from mumbai, india. many people killed, so many injured. there are still efforts underway to find people trapped in the rubble. >> reporter: that's right. we believe rescue efforts are still underway. there still could be people trapped inside the rubble. we don't know that for sure. but rescue efforts are very much underway. you know, the fire was so massive, it gutted two of the buildings within the temple complex. but the impact of so severe that several other smaller buildings withi

i'm george howell.he latest on the deadly collapse of an overpass in india. authorities are now charging a construction company for that incident. at least 24 people were killed on thursday in kolkata. an executive of the company denied any fault, saying that the disaster was an action of god. cnn's correspondent has been covering this for us, and she spoke with some of the victims' families. >> reporter: despair and mourning. they were on a hand-pulled rickshaw headed to a nearby hospital to visit an ailing relative when a meter-long chunk of concrete and metal came crashing down. in seconds their lives ended. while at home the world turned upside down for their two sons. their shaved heads a sign of grieving in hindu communities. he had to identify his parents. >> condition was very bad. they were not in position to see and recognize. it was very bad. full body was burnt. >> reporter: their father was the sole breadwinner. he was their only son. we didn't hear from them for hours, we couldn't get in t

i'm george howell. to a story that we're following from bangladesh. police there say a university professor was hacked to death near his home in western bangladesh along the indian border. the 58-year-old siddiqui was wait for a bus as two or three assailants attacked him from behind. the reason for that assault, though, is still unclear. it's all still under investigation. earlier this month, blogger was murdered when they hacked him with machetes and shot him. that was one of a string of killings in bangladesh targeting secular writers. >>> we are now learning more about the terrorists who attacked the city of brussels a month ago. one of the two that blew himself up at the airport on march 22nd. and we know he worked at the airport for 11 days in 2011 and for a week in 2012. he was contracted by a company there to do general cleaning. meanwhile, an attorney representing former isis hostages says her clients have also identified him as the jailer in syria. four former say a brussels man guarded them.

i'm george howell.inue covering the breaking news this hour. two very strong earthquakes and the deadly aftermath on opposite sides of the pacific rim. the first to hit japan on saturday, and now ecuador. a magnitude 7.8 quake there struck the coastline. so far, at least 77 people are dead, nearly 600 more are injured. rescue workers are still trying to save people who may be trapped beneath a collapsed bridge. a state emergency remains in effect. state of emergency in place across many parts of the area. the epicenter of this initial quake was about 170 kilometer, 107 miles, from the capital of ecuador, quito. some 55 aftershocks have been felt so far. let's get the latest on this earthquake and the damage that is still being repaired. the weather is playing into. this our meteorologist, derek van dam, is here. >> first we'll talk about japan and then move to ecuador, too. obviously, very busy in the weather center. busy for the search and rescue crews, as well. in japan, first and foremost, they did h
