top democrats in the house, look at the names there, pelosi, hoyer, clyburn.ll the top democrats. look at all of the different republican leaders, from various scandal-clad denny hastert all the way down to lee stefanik, who came into leadership this year to effectively push out liz cheney because of her fight with donald trump. what does this say? the house is fighting things with donald trump over what they want? >> i think that's spot on. the republican party has always been a party in the house of representatives and senate that functions based off the believes of the members in that conference. you have a lot of folks changing the direction of the party constantly. i think about the style of boehner and how he dealt with the freedom caucus. you think of the style of paul ryan, how he dealt with the freedom caucus. mccarthy, how he's dealing with the right flank, some of whom are in the freedom caucus, and i think what you see there is three very distinct leadership styles and three different moments where members wanted different things. could that change

steny hoyer and kevin mccarthy warns a debt ceiling hike would struggle to clear their chamber. they're acknowledging they're largely in the dark. spokespeople for schumer and mcconnell have refused to comment whether combining the bills is part of their negotiations. joining me now, ali vitali. good morning. tell us what we can expect. can the senate pass the defense bill with that debt ceiling tied to it? we have heard there's plenty of opposition to it already. >> yeah. plenty of opposition and a little bit of consternation over this. it's an idea that's been floated because both of these things are important do before the end of the year, though, i would also note the debt ceiling is its own crisis in that it cannot be moved and it must be dealt with. there's some competing dates about when the u.s. line of credit actually runs out. the treasury department, though, is still sort of the date everyone is going with on the hill. that puts it around december 15th. we know that congress has a tendency to not deal with these crises until right before the deadline, though, they did

> reporter: you have that right, laura, but the bigger picture here is house majority leader steny hoyer put this to a vote in the house. they decide what goes on the floor and they won't support this. and even if they did pass this, president joe biden would just veto it anyway. but really the bigger picture here is it shows the bipartisan opposition to the president's vaccine mandate for larger employers. now, remember, this was a mandate that he directed the labor department to enforce this vaccine mandate for any companies that have 100 employees or more. and republicans oppose this because they say that this already puts a strain on struggling businesses, and they believe that vaccines are a personal choice, which is why they did this. now, this effort was led by senator mike braun of indiana. and as you said, laura, it did have two democrats in favor of this bill. it was actually, as you said, jon tester, moderate democrat from montana, and joe manchin, a moderate democrat from west virginia. but the rest of the democrats in the chamber, of course, opposed this legislation. but as

there was a bit of a holdup by republicans over accusations that house majority leader steny hoyer disparnged republican congressman jim banks. once they sorted through all that they picked up the debate around 5:30 p.m. the debate is done now. there's some other house business happening. we're waiting for them to vote on whether to refer mark meadows to the department of justice for contempt of congress. as they have previously done with steve bannon. if he is held in contempt, the case goes to the doj, where they will decide whether or not to prosecute. the actual vote is expected soon. we'll continue to bring you the latest on what's happening on the floor. of course this all comes a day after the house committee investigating the insurrection voted unanimously in favor of the contempt resolution the house takes up tonight. and part of the reason that happened, a big part of the reason, is because mark meadows, former chief of staff, his defense that he didn't have to comply with the subpoena because of executive privilege has basically been invalidated. i mean, meadows has been claiming h
