ceo of hp inc.tructuring costs boom. how these plans impact executive pay? cory johnson is in palo alto. cory, what does this mean for what they get in the bank? >> fundamentally, it could mean more money. we take a look at how this works. i prepared this piece before the news today. as the restructuring is longer, as layoffs get bigger, it is possible that some executive pay packages get even bigger. check it out. hewlett-packard announced its one-time structuring might take more time, with more costs and more layoffs. it could all help ceo meg whitman make more. the restructuring costs estimated $3.6 billion in 2012 has ballooned to $4.1 billion. 29,000 layoffs will hit 50,000. but what is restructuring? let's take a look at business as usual, structuring. that's the cost of building a business. you have a new idea, you hire someone to build it. but maybe it becomes obsolete, maybe it is stale. you shut down the project, you lay off the someone. that is business. the restructuring, when a company

david, hp a big one.you mentioned, will result in two companies with $50 billion in revenue, huge. >> yeah. 48 and 59, i think -- 48 and 49 in the fortune 50. untested ceo will be running one, know meg whitman the nonexecutive chair of h hp inc., the pc and printing business. stock up 5%. we didn't talk about it in our interview but also contending that the peer multiples on ear side higher than what hp gets credit for and in separating them out and giving them purer play, if you will, they will garner higher multiples to their earnings in the stock market, hence higher price. that, of course, oftentimes a reason for doing splits, although meg whitman did not cite that specifically as a reason behind this. >> talk about care fusion, one of the top gainer, the top gainer, in fact on the s&p 500 at open a big deal going in medical equipment players today. becton paying $58 a share in cash for care fusion, both involved in pumps and cath they ares and ininfusions. the acquire and acquiree are gaining at the

the whole one hp concept.ast few months citing the speed of change in the technology entry in the enterprise part of the business which in some ways had been slower moving, they have decided that these companies are better off as being more agile and more focused. interestingly the same words we heard last week from john donahoe at ebay, the guy who came after meg whitman there in explaining why they were doing a 180 on their decision to split that company. here, of course, it's been around for a long time. but the last three or four months has been the key consideration points. >> david, i guess the questions, there's a lot of them that still come. what's next? how does this get processed. and we were even kicking around questions like do either of these companies stay in the dow 30? >> well, i mean, they are going to be numbers 48 and 49. the s&p, 50. we're going have one hp inc. with revenue. they're near each other. interestingly profitable so they're still going to be enormous enterprises. i think that ha

i think that hp has a very strong brand. i think it will help us to fight one of our main challenges, to create awareness to 3d printing and different manufacturing. nevertheless, as a competitor, hp is a serious company which will announce the technology. i'm not sure how it will be reflected in the products, i just don't know enough at this point of time. neverthele nevertheless, a very strong company and 25 years on the road and experience relevant for our customers a lot of expertise and our product which are going to come in the next few years which i think will give a good fight to hp and any other competitors whi joining the market. >> and particularly when it comes to the 3d printer, available next year. they claim, though, their technology will be ten times faster, have significant improvements. 3d printing economics because of less energy consumption, faster, less waste. what do you say to that? essentially they're saying their ten times faster than you? >> so first of all, again, i don't know the exact specificati
