>> joining me now, nbc news.com's jane timm and "roll call" columnist jonathan allen, co-author of "hrc." let's begin with the call. is there any sense from the trump camp you on how this came about? >> i think the transition team did not regard this as a big deal until the outlets started saying this is really a different thing. this is the first american leader or president-elect since 1979 to the speak with a taiwanese leader. donald trump seemed to be litigating this on twitter. this does not seem to have been -- i don't think they realized what this would do until it had already happened. and as hans said, i think we're going to see this happen a lot. that the president-elect is going to handle diplomacy in a way he sees fit and then respond as the chips do fall. >> and jonathan, is there any consensus on how this might affect diplomatic relations? republicans are raising it, but some calling it a threat to diplomatic security s. it all along republican lines? >> absolutely. i think ideally the president-elect or the president of the united states when donald trump becomes that wou

. >>> joining me, jonathan allen, columnist for "roll call" and co-author of hrc. alex bolton, senior staff writer at the hill. thanks for being here, gentlemen. >> good morning. >> let's start with today's "new york times" article. writing about the apparent turf war that's developed between the trump and obama camps. first off, is there really a turf war here? and when weather -- and when weather is it the worst? >> absolutely, president obama wants to finish out thetorium which he was elected. donald trump feels -- term to which he was elected. donald trump feels that he doesn't want to change too much american policy before he gets in the door. there is a turf war. the most recent case is an illustrative one where they have separate policies regarding the israel settlements and the u.n. vote on that. president obama didn't exercise that veto that donald trump wanted him to. frankly, i'm surprised donald trump didn't ask vladimir putin, his close friend, to exercise a veto power there. but yeah, i think this is a real struggle. typically the incoming president w

> joining me, beth fouhy, politics reporter and jonathan allen, "roll call" columnist and author of hrc. thank you very much for being here. and beth, let's begin with the "washington post" report on the cia. how did they learn about this, and why are we hearing about it now? >> yeah. i think a lot of premasking the question. we suspect and reported throughout the final months of the campaign that there was evidence suggesting that russia was involved in the leak of the dnc emails, the leak of campaign -- hillary clinton campaign chairman john podesta's emails. that it came from wikileaks who received it from sources within russia, perhaps the government top of the level. now we're seeing this confirmed. unfortunately now it's after the election, before we might have been able to do something about it or bring the truth to light. there was evidently some -- some effort to not release it before the election, looking in a way to yet again sort of disrupt the election, the obama administration was really grappling with how to handle this. and there was some pushback among republicans inclu
