the hubble space telescope has changed the way we understand the universe. is celebrating a quarter of a century in orbit. we will look at some highlights after the short break. ♪ angie: this year marks 25 years in space for the hubble telescope. the remarkable eye on the skies has intermediate hundreds of discoveries in his time, giving us new perspective on our place in the universe. as astronomers celebrate his 25th anniversary, here is a closer look at its history. i am the public astronomer here at the royal astronomy. i was using mostly the couple space telescope. telescope -- hubbell space telescvope. in 1990 bylaunched the space shuttle discovery. mirrormously its was the wrong shape so they had to send a crew of astronauts to correct it so it could produce sharp images. it was hugely successful. the telescope went on to perform better than all expectations and it is lasted twice as long as they expected. it's really hard to choose the most important discoveries that hubble has made because it has been involved in so many amazing studies. one of the

we're getting ready to replace the hubble telescope. they're wonderful things. they're facinating things. they're groundbreaking things. but they're not necessarily all the same thing, which if you're watching from outside you might look and say, "well, what's nasa for in 2015"? >> yeah, the universe is a big place and nasa since it's inception has been about looking outward, helping us to understand the universe in which we live but more importantly helping us to understand this planet on which we live because it all begins right here. we were established in 1958 and since then we've been challenged by the national space act to make discoveries about our planet, make discoveries about the universe and, oh by the way, continue to keep the u. s. first in aeronautics and space exploration. >> since i was a kid, and as a boomer i was right in the sweet spot for nasa's heyday as an agency. and john glenn and gus grissom and on and on and on were figures that we talked about. those days, i think it was very easy to answer the question, "what is nasa for? "but as we'r

hubble was launched in 1990 with the space shuttle discovery.ly its mirror was perfectly the wrong shape. nasa had to send a crew up to correct it so that it could produce sharp images. it was successful. it went on to perform beyond expectations. it has lasted 10 years longer than expected. it is really hard to choose the most important discoveries that hubble has made because it has been involved in so many amazing studies. i suppose one of the most important important things it did was to help us understand that the universe as well as expanding the big bang is expanding faster and faster. it is one of the first telescopes to produce an image of the planet around another star. it has shown how stars and planets form and in my own field of research, the centers of very violent galaxies, it has allowed us to see down to the black hole that is incredibly intense and violent region of different galaxies. really, really exciting stuff. it changes the way we see universe. guy: hard to get your head around. rocket science. great stuff. astron my at

and what the press now does with the hubble telescope and other observatories is really great. they're bringing the cosmos back to the kids and i like to say that astronomy is the gateway science.it gets kids interested in science and technology. then they go on in fields that are more immediately useful to society. wouldn't you love to have ience teachers like that all the time? get you excited and make you want to go--but talk to me aaron about the notion of students actually grasping the importance of this. well i think it's a fundamental human interest in the universe and the world around us.when you grow up you wanna explore the universe,explore the world around you,and seeing the night sky if you can get out to a dark area when in san jose if you're immediately in the city you don't see the night sky but if you get a little bit farther outside the city,it just strikes you immediately the immense beauty of the universe and i think people naturally want to explore that and find out more. what's amazing is through all our technology today we've made huge strides in seeing wh

our view of the cosmos was obscured by the presence of the atmosphere, but in the early 1990s the hubble space telescope began producing startling images of the cosmos from space and primary among them are images of exoplanets or planets that reside outside our solar system. as of april of 2015, roughly 1900 exoplanets have been confirmed, and some earth-like planet haven't been detected as well. so by inference these findings bolster the case for life existing outside of our solar system. astro biology can be defined as the study of the origins evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. if the right elements are available under the right environmental conditions, then the assumption is that life has a good chance of emerging. among the most important elements for the creation of life is carbon. carbon has many qualities that make it an excellent compound for life. when looking for signs of alien life astro biologists use a water strategy. water has unique characteristics that make it an ideal medium in which life can evolve. but water in and of itself does not guarantee the em
