it was the party of harry truman, roosevelt, kennedy, lyndon johnson and vice president hubert humphrey. to sds, the problem of the democratic party t permitted to have the southern racist white democrats in the party. and johnson and humphrey and kennedy were not moving quick enough to deal with the white south. at the same time, white working class people, you know, they supported anti-communism, interventionist foreign policy. labor unions were not open to admitting many blacks. labor unions were hawkish, anti-communist. that was the critique from the left. the new right had a similar critique, though they pretended to be quiet about events in the south at the civil rights movement, the new right did not like labor unions this interviews with the right of businessmen to do their own thing. the libertarian right did not believe that government had any business regulating the boardroom or the bedroom. and this creates an interesting kind of synergy where there's some issues in which the libertarian right and the far left actually agree. the radical libertarian right and the new left su

producer mick caouette c-span: when did you first think about doing a documentary of hubert humphrey? >> guest: it would have been the late fall of 1999. i was working at the minnesota historical society. and i ran across the country collection which is just enormous. this will hundred manuscript boxes, large minister to boxes, 10,000 films, 10,000 photographs, 5,000 audio tapes, and i started a documentary work earlier, maybe three weeks earlier and what was no one lummis? it was a gold mine of material. then i learned more about him. i grew up in minneapolis, he is part of my childhood but i didn't know about him and he was kind of forgotten in minnesota but all the material just, you know, was delete kutz releases that's why started. as i dug into it, it was wonderful. c-span: who was he? >> guest: who was he? use more of a humanitarian than a politician frankly. he used politics as a religion, he wanted to be a creature and saw it as a better people than church and that's how he used politics. c-span: 25 years in the senate? >> guest: i believe it was 25, may be closer to 30 becau

the once the standoff prominently in my memory would include hubert humphrey who was perhaps one of the greatest centers of all time although i think somewhat of a tragic figure because of what happened to him during the vietnam war when he was vice president. he really invented the modern senate. the role to some extent. he communicated the senate to the public on the disarmament and civil rights particularly, and he was one of the great senators. the 60's and the 70's, the jury probe found moments in american history. coming back to what i remember is the question of the civil rights movement and the profound impact that have on this country but it wasn't only martin luther king jr., there was the black panthers, the assassination of the early 60's of president kennedy and what that meant to the country. clearly the war in vietnam profoundly impacted the whole nation dividing us and so forth. the rapid speed by which president johnson of the society and the impact that had. the cultural movement, woodstock and women's movement, the environmental movement, etc., etc.. talk for a moment
