a coming out party for scott walker david polians key and mike huckabee's victory in 2008. for senator marco rubio, the forum comes right as he shifts campaign into higher gear. sunday rubio will join the candidate forum in california hosted by the koch brothers funded group freedom partners that will include walker, kentucky senator rand paul and texas senator ted cruz. chris christie has a challenge in the hawkeye state. while christie has controversies to work out in new jersey. insiders say he plans to aggressively campaign in new hampshire as well as iowa where conservatives are suspicious of northeastern republicans as too moderate. by contrast heartland candidate like former arkansas governor mike huckabee are eagerly embraced. he won the 08 caucuses still has a formidable following. rick santorum wrapping within a five-day tour of the state narrowly beat romney. texas governor rick perry joins the iowa campaign late in 2012, coupled with self-inflicted political gaffes made it impossible to compete. newcomer ben carson draws huge crowds and has volunteers organizing in all 99 counties. his

back to candidates they've met before and so if you're governor huckabee and looking at some of these new faces, rand paul, maybe marco rubio, maybe ted cruz, maybe thinking in a crowded field my familiarity may help me? >> he has name recognition in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, having a fox television show, having a talk radio show gives you a lot of name recognition. he has a book coming out later this month. the question for huckabee or anybody else falls into that lane of the party, where is your path? how do you, after you get through iowa, where do you win, besides maybe south carolinas? 'a difficult path. someone like rick santorum was able to hang on in part because mitt romney wasn't that popular with the base. can a huckabee or santorum make it through to the end. >> if you're a huckabee and now that you've made a lot of money you risk losing part of that money. >> that's the question, how much does he want this, particularly since he has seemed to get pretty comfortable having a life outside politics for the last six years, but look, there's a lot of people in iowa carrying a torch for mike huckabee and r

marco rubio, ted cruz and rand paul. you have the ideological debate, santorum, huckabee, i guess you would put christie, romney, ted cruz would say the mushy middle. it's fascinating. >> absolutely. on the establishment side of things we actually haven't seen this for a while where you have a bunch of credible contenders on that side. usually it's sort of the conservative grassroots wing that has a bunch of people. then you have your romneys, your john mccains, your george w. bushes who drive through that lane. that is going to be interesting to watch. christie is interesting here because both jeb and romney draw from not only the same voters, mainstream business friendly folks, but also the same donors. you know, over the last few weeks both jeb bush and mitt romney have been aggressive in calling these big donors, most of them new york based. remember, a year ago that was supposed to be christie's crowd just over the river. he is calling donors but he seems to be moving a little bit more slowly. if you talk to christie world, they say, what's the point right now in chasing new cycles? it's january 2015. we've got time

huckabee. what kind of traction does a ted cruz get? you have marco rubio bobby jindal trying to find a place in this. today is the first real day of the republican primary campaign. >> robert i'm just surprised there was any legitimate suggestion that romney would throw his hat in for the third time because it was hard to find a republican who publicly said this was a good idea. romney has a closed door four-hour staff meeting in which advisers relayed a sobering reality. they supported romney and thought he would be the best president, but did not necessarily think he should run for president for the third time. did you hear of anybody who thought this was a good idea? >> if you looked at a lot of the outward signs, mitt romney's name was always at the top of those lists. granted, some of that has to do with name recognition. there was some outward facing signs that there were probably enough straws to grasp to do this. my sense is what really happened was, as you said behind closed doors, on telephone conversations, mitt romney just simply decided it was

huckabee dr. ben carson and senator rand paul. there are another names, marco rubio in there as well. joe, as you look at this, would you expect announcements to start rolling in? >> absolutely. ed's right, first of all i expect a pretty big for gop a beg field. they don't usually have, i think the kind of field we'll see this time, you know, maybe 10 candidates running. and i think both bush and huckabee have advantages. bush has name and organization out there and donors that are already lined up. huckabee having won iowa, when he did run has an, has people who volunteered for him out there who like him immensely. he has got a following. i think this will speed up others getting in the race because ed's right you will need every single day of the next year to be ready for that first iowa caucus. martha: we expect the next four to six weeks we'll hear a number of these announcements but hillary clinton sort of pushed the ball a little further down the field ed, and there is discussion about maybe spring in terms of announcement. what is her strategy there and a lot
