through in january, i finally got to it in march, i am still the only senate confirmed a person at hud. even though we got to three yesterday, they do not start until next week. so i got five months by myself. but that is where the reading came in again. reading volumes and volumes of material, of all the things that the deputy secretary and assistant secretary are supposed to be telling you, and learning that stuff on your own. and more importantly, getting the corporation of the people who have been there -- and the cooperation of the people who've been there. the everyday people. they are not horrible people. you work with them and we need to get away from the concept that this group is bad and in this group is good, evaluate people on the basis of who they are and be willing to work with everybody. you will go further and faster. host: i agree with that. if have spoken and written about the challenges you faced growing up and becoming a professional you did and i think you touched on that a little bit, but the you think it is more difficult for young people who are maybe in a simil

i would love it if they talked about how the people at hud, the career people, the people who came inition team, how they stepped up to the plate, recognizing that i didn't have any assistant secretaries or deputy secretary, and they have kept things moving at a very rapid pace. we have been able to fulfill all of our obligations and some, and began to really reorient things and change from a bureaucracy to a business model. we hired a coo, cio, we are bringing on a cfo, and taking a holistic view of the problems that exist and fissioning them rather than putting little patchwork here and there, and those are the kind of things that i think are going to make an incredible difference. then you look at something like the rad program, rental assistance demonstration, where there may be a public housing unit that is far behind in terms of repairs and things that need to be done, and able to turn those over to developers with the understanding that affordable units will be built and we have ways of filling in, subsidizing the gap, and you have a lot of local interests now in that project,

the hit on the hud budget will be felt severely. i am not in a position, i am no longer at hud, i am not in a position to affect the federal budget. you want to find a way that resources are not cut for those that need. renter tax credits, things that would focus on the lowest and greatest need at a time when other resources are becoming less available. additional flexibility within the tax credits so that resources can be used in more than one way is a way to fill the gaps. as the home funding goes away, fundable funding, we will need to look at other places for it to come in. study vaccine part, one on the effects of stable and affordable housing on incomes and non-housing radiating benefits that came from homeless families provided with long-term housing subsidies. within 3 years a whole collection of impacts were saying. n,mestic violence went dow separations were lower, and children were less mobile between schools and daycare. the longer-term health studies show that are directly connected to adult health and mental well-being
