in addition, service providers and advocates believe hud's methodology leads to undercounting. so let's take a closer look at those numbers mean, according to hud of those experiencing homelessness in california, 70.4 where unsheltered the highest percentage in the nation. california reported the largest number of unaccompanied youth in the nation at 36% as well as accounting for the 31% of veterans experiencing homelessness in the us. let's break down the numbers for three cities in the bay area. these are four point in time counts in 2019 and all increases from 17 in san francisco 8035. people were experiencing homelessness in oakland. the numbers 4071 in san jose. the last count showed 6097 homeless individuals. all of those cities and others have introduced their own solutions to housing and homelessness. another reminder that count is before covid-19, and it's debilitating impact on the economy. the biennial count was due to happen in january of this year. but like most things, the pandemic postponed those activities. the majority of bay area counties pushed back their poi

joining in he is former hud secretary and 2020 presidential candidate lee an castro, and he's also aning me executive of justice brian fowler. thank you both for joining me. i want to start with you first because one of the things that seems to be so off-putting in texas is a lot of things that are seen to be legislative are not coming from the grassroots. a lot of it seems to be coming out of washington, whether we're talking about the her damage foundation when it comes to the voting rights restrictions or when it comes to the anti-abortion laws. can you speak to that, how this is inconsistent with what texans want if it's coming from outside of the state? >> there's a huge gap between the people of texas now today, the texas that we live in and the gop leadership that, of course, is in cahoots with gop leadership in washington, d.c. as you know, this is nothing new. folks will remember about 20 years ago when congressman tom delay led an effort, started an effort in texas to do mid-decade redistricting, and so that connection between texas republicans and d.c. republicans to rig t

in hud county. i should mention that county is really really conservative. it's really republican. to prove my point, these were the results in her county from the november election. the donald trump won 81% of the vote. there he beat joe biden in hood county by 64 point. keep in mind, over the entire state of texas, donald trump's margin of victory was six points in hood county it was 64 points. an absolute landslide. [laughs] by any measure. so, if you were a trump supporter, who fervently believes what trump says, which is that the 2020 election was stolen from him, or you might be mad at that, you might direct your eye or about that, somewhere where the results don't seem right to you, a place you expected trump to win, but biden won instead. you might inspect that hope county texas that won trump won by a 64 point margin, you might expect a hood county and non controversial experience nonpartisan election administrators, you might expect that and her to be unlikely targets. for the rage of trump supporting republicans angry about the election results. but, here we are. the tex

yesterday, in my district, secretary marcia fudge was here, secretary of hud, and we talked about the housing components of the build back better bill, and they're extremely important, because there's so many unsheltered people. we have a housing crisis. the affordability crisis in our country is everywhere, especially here in california. and so we have to have negotiations and make some determinations. i think when you look at 98% of democrats, i'm a member of the budget committee and we voted out the build back better bill, we agree with that. so who are they willing to take off of the table? i think that's the question that has to be asked, do we take children, the child tax credit off of the table, do we take childcare off the table? and we know so many families, especially women, want to get back into the workforce. they cannot afford childcare. we know that our elders deserve home care and our caregiving economy deserves good paying jobs to take care of our elders. those that are opposing the build back better bill, the biden agenda, needs to talk about who they're willing to sa
