the reason why it's got this name, is is it's an area of low pressure that usually sits north of hudson bay, north of canada, but in this scenario, that arctic air has spilled south. this is the typical view on the radar. snow flying and rain heading up in the northeast, rain on the opposite side, but here's what you don't see, in the last 20 years or so. monday's high, monday's 20 in minneapolis, minus 12 in chicago and look how far south that air is plunging down towards new orleans. look at atlanta. 33. and this cold air will continue to head to new york. 45 tomorrow, but new york city looking at highs in and around new york in the teens on tuesday. so this cold air mass will take at least 48 to 72 hours to push off to the eastern sea board, this means all these cities with the wind and icy conditions lasting throughout the day, many more flight delays likely. a completely different scenario, perhaps now you'll better appreciate your temperatures. 50s and 60s outside. we'll talk more about our warm temperatures here and a chance of showers coming up in a few minutes. >> i appreciate them

the british fur trading hudson bay company on the columbia river was the closest thing to civilization that this area could boast. all of the wild land north of california was, by'ty, jointly -- and i should say uneasily -- shared by great britain and the united states. but finally in that year, 1846, the stalemate was ended. the two nations peacefully signed a treaty and agreed to divide this part of the world at the 49th parallel, just 20 miles north of where i stand today. now for the first time, this area became a part of the united states, a part of the newly-created oregon territory. that was just 14 years before the great war between the states. the bay was called bellingham bay, all right, because late in the previous century a few spaniards and an englishman or two had sailed through here looking for the fabled northwest passage. and one of them, george vancouver, had charted the bay and named it after a british admiral who had provisioned his expedition, lord william bellingham. that year was 1792, and there were no white men living here then. nor were there any when the oreg
