when he was on the hudson institute, i was on one of his boards. we have had a relationship or three decades. brian: when did you get into politics? don: i came to washington in 1972 from oklahoma. i was very first -- young at the time. that was my first entry into politics. i was with him for five years. it is something that had always been in my blood. i love politics and government and campaigns. i had a very strong feeling about how important it was to be engaged and was able to do iings earlier than i thought would. i always wanted to work in washington. i wanted to work in the senate. i finally made the decision to go to the private sector. brian: how much of what you wrote in the book goes on with other people there thinking about running? don: probably a lot. it is obviously a personal decision but as mitch said, in his circumstance, he had just been reelected. he made that famous commercials saying this to be the last office you will have to vote for me on. he felt like he still had commitments to indiana. he was stuck in the middle of it.
