people like lauren hughes, nan woolverton, laura wasser, which vince golden have all been just sort of incredible of supporters of my research over the years. i mean, it's nice to meet some new faces like jon garcia. so yeah. it's really special for me to be here. and so, yeah, i guess i'd like to start by saying i'm really happy to be here. and so i've just published this book on 19th century american comic. and when i started this project, i had just finished my ph.d. in american at the university of michigan. it wasn't a comics project, but i had always really loved comics and always wanted to kind of find a way to bring those two interest together. and as someone who was and when i thought about, you know, that project, i think like a lot of people, i thought that that 19th century comics were really limited to things like political cartoons and, you know, racist caricatures, like e.w. clay's image of jim crow. that's that's not jim crow. that's martin van buren. anthis, of course, is thomas nast's famous image of boss tweed, right? this is what what we think of when we think of 19
