netflix kind of drove it with the theatrical product and then there was hulu with popular tv product, the categories of content create menus. >> so tell us a little bit about curiosity stream, and is that an actual threat to -- i mean, you were at discovery until may of just last year. is this a threat to a discovery? how do we look at this in this landscape? >> well, i remain a very bullish shareholder of discovery, because of international growth as well as discovery owns all of its rights content and it can certainly exploit beyond cable. but for curiosity stream, we launch tomorrow at 6:00 a.m., you know, and the difference here is that rather than launching with one show, we have an entire catalog of content that's instantly available. >> how much do you spend -- >> well, we'll be spending in the tens of millions of dollars on content. so we have original content as well as acquisitions from great producers around the world, like the bbc and nhk. so it's factual content for the life-long curious. it's not for everybody, but we think it's for about 25% of the population, and that'

we talk a lot here on "squawk alley" about netflix and streaming and hulu.ow is that influencing how you come up with programming and how people take in reality tv? >> well, it's like the wild west out there. it's the new frontier. i mean the business is changing every day. and we're just trying to hold on to the viewers that, you know, are so loyal to the shows that they're watching. one of the ways is, "watch what happens live" my own show, the only live show in late night and i think that that's a dvr buster because people feel like wait, this is actually live at 11:00 every night. i want to see what's happening. so live is one element and, you know, other elements are just continuing to make the shows great and make their -- come up with ways that people, you know, to drive people that want to watch those shows live. that's the key. getting them to watch the shows on tv live. >> "watch what happens live," who's your favorite "vanderpump rules" character? >> well, you know, it's hard to say. i think kristen this season was an mvp. wouldn't you say? she wa

you have hulu, netflix, and a host of other services going direct.re discovery or viacom and you do have channels that people don't care about, why not end them? jason: it has to do with the overall value of the deal. ultimately, when you package these channels together, you are getting more incremental value depending on how the companies look at it. sometimes they are not even racked up in the deal. you do not even know what the percept price is on the channel. alex: has wall street, on to this, do you think? there are a number love cable networks -- number of cable networks that you could define as being vulnerable and yet they still have not taken much of a hit. jason: tv is still a huge business and is not going anytime anywhere soon. it is entrepreneurs to think about where should we be in the future? hbo relies is they are under pressure from netflix. they have a great business in cable, but i imagine that hbo's subs are not quite cord cutters. they realize where the business is going and you don't have to share revenue on top of that and you

john, what do you make of the argument that you have people like you and hulu and netflix, all greator con cap -- for comcast. >> i made the argument that i do not think that holds water. the concerns are not so much about their ability to control programming, but rather comcast's ability to control access to the internet and all these wonderful and over-the-top services. you can by hbo now or whatever but you still need a connection to an internet service provider. comcast would be the hugest in the country. 63% of markets in the united states, they would be the only source of a high-speed connection. the only internet provider who could hook you up at high speeds. the abundance of alternative channels will not get rid of that problem. betty: it will not get rid of that problem, but it does get rid of the, dominating the dial problem. >> on the programming side. but we saw in there in the fcc's neutrality ruling, the big can turn his act test. they did not want big companies to be able to charge extra for special access. that is what approving the comcast and time warner merger coul

alix: how is this different from sling tv or hulu? walter: it is not.do not know what they are going to announce and include. there is this expectation that you need to include every broadcast channel, and they do not know that that is the case. there are customers out there, if you're going to save them a lot of money, they're going to take one bundle that may not have something. alix: how much is it going to cost apple? presumably these retransmission fees are huge they are a huge moneymaker for these broadcasting networks. walter: they have been able to get their price point down to as low as $20. it is a person driver fee -- per subscriber fee. alix: apple left their juicy margins look at their iphone. will they have to eat it? walter: it is more about the ecosystem. if they could sell you additional phones or ipads, if this drives more usage, and people can get a very -- by ipads and give them a fat margin. alix: steve jobs never seems to care that much about apple tv, and all of a sudden he was like tim cook is making a payment. -- all of the sudd
