david hume kennerly was the official white house photographer during the ford administration. he got to see it all from behind the scenes and he gave us some indelible images. tonight he remembers a great first lady in his own words. >> the pictures of them having breakfast in the kitchen of their house. he was president of the united states and he was commuting to the white house. i think it was remarkable. what you're looking at in that moment was how they lived their life. they were very ordinary people. very soon after the fords got into the white house, mrs. ford received some really bad medical news. they had a prearranged visit by former first lady lady bird johnson and the two johnson girls. she had her suitcase all packed to go to the navel hospital to get her mastectomy. she never said a word to mrs. johnson about it. she just approached it with not only courage, but a sense of determination that she was going to fight her way through it. and the photographs they took inside the navy hospital really show it, there she is with bob hope. the picture of mrs. ford lookin

senior political analyst brit hume has thoughts what's going on with the debt ceiling back and forth. today it seems the biggest development was that democrats came off the increasing of revenues, increasing taxes. >> right. it looks like higher tax rates in particular off the table, because the democrats agreed to it. as far as we know the president didn't have a problem with that. so that issue, it appears that phase of it has been resolved. it also seems they were close, the leaders of the two parties in the congress, two houses, two parties, were close to a deal, and when harry reid, the senate democratic leader, took it to the white house to run it by the white house, it was going to be in phases, one debt ceiling increase with spending cuts, followed by another later perhaps, the president wouldn't have it. so now we know, i think, what the president's main issue is, the thing he cares most about. it's not higher taxes. it is getting this issue off the table after this next vote until after the election. that seems to be where he is. so taxes are off the table. we know where the

joining me now with historical perspective on this, senior political analyst brit hume. >> hello, bret years ago, newly elected republican house went toe-to-toe with democratic president or spending, deficit and yes, raising the debt ceiling. the new speaker newt gingrich engaged in a series of white house negotiations with president bill clinton and aimed at a compromise to avoid a government shutdown. talks failed. so republicans who controlled both house and senate passed a bill to keep government open. they attached a significant package of spending cutting. mr. clinton though he said he favored cuts insisted programs dealing with things like the environment, education and medicare had to be protected. sound familiar? the president vetoed the bill. which left the government short of funds and unable to borrow. the result was a partial shutdown. which to the coner the nation of the republicans -- consternation of the republicans -- public hated. the media coverage at the time you wouldn't know the precipitating event was the president veto. as far as you could tell the republicans s
