hunter take the stand? our legal eagle at the court is steven friedland. he joins us live from greensboro.hat the defense is going to come out strong for today in trying to prove as they hit the ground running? >> reporter: this is a completely different case than what we saw with the prosecution. the defense is emphasizing that these were not campaign contributions. their first witness was the chief financial officer for the edwards campaign. the fireworks, the sordid details are gone. >> the prosecution did not call rielle hunter. what are the odds the defense will? >> reporter: i think the odds are getting longer as we go through this case. she's unpredictable. the focus is for the defense on the legal question about campaign contributions. rielle hunter brings this case right back into the affair and the pregnancy. that's not where the defense wants to go. >> all right. also, john edwards, brilliant trial attorney in his own right, but is there a possibility that he could take the stand in his own defense and is that a good idea or bad idea? >> reporter: it is always a possibility john

hunter. joining me now is steve freedland, a law professor who has been in the courtroom for this trial. good to see you, stevenat it was like in there yesterday. and do you think that sherry was an effective witness for the prosecution? >> sherry young showed that there's another family involved here, the young family. and when she broke down, that showed a new dimension to this human element drama. she showed that the young family was very much affected by what happened. >> but is the young family -- and if p they were affected or unaffected relevant to the legal questions here? >> one thing the prosecution has to worry about is focusing the jury on the federal election violations and not simply make this a tawdry reality show. however, if the jury believes sherry and believes her husband, that goes a long way towards disbelieving the story by the defense. >> so what specific points did she make, one or two, that you thought were key, that if the jury believes them could really help the prosecution? >> that she spoke to john edwards directly and he acknowledged or told her that this was legal. the real issue

steven, more aides on the stand today, some of them associated with 100-year-old bunny mel lon, gave the bulk of the money to keep rielle hunterress, quiet. how important is her role on this? >> bunny's role is important. campaign laws limit donations to $2300. it's listed today she did give a donation of $2300. she gave hundreds of thousands of additional dollars. the question is was bunny rescuing john edwards the person and signing up for his campaign against poverty or was she contributing more to his campaign for president. >> meanwhile very young was on the stand this week pretty much defending her husband andrew young, edwards right-hand man through all this. there's other witnesses coming on not painting such a rosey picture of the kind of guy andrew young is. >> we saw today in court one of the prosecution's own witnesses called andrew young shady. this is really important to the defense that andrew young, a key witness to the prosecution, be brought low and disbelieved. >> professor steven friedman from university school of law, great to have you with us once again. we'll let you get back in there. >>> after months o

steven freedland. attorney alex forger is the lawyer for bunny mellon. he stephed forcefully all the cash payments she gave john edwards, this money used to cover up the affair with hunterthey were gifts. how did that go over with the government and how do you think it affects the case moving forward? >> forger was a very good witness for the government. he showed that there were a lot of secrets and the secret about the money trail was even secret from him, the lawyer for bunny mellon. where this money went is still being discussed today with tim toben on the stand. it's showing that the money was diverted at least for andrew young and andrew young didn't disclose this to his friend. but alex forger was a key witness for the prosecution. >> a lot of people wonder why is the reason bunny mellon would give so much of her fortune towards john edwards' -- and people getting the impression in court that she was doing this just because she likes him? >> this case is all about why people did things. it's motivation. bunny mellon was a rescuer. was she rescuer john edwards the person or was she rescuing john edwards the presidential candidate? remember, she helped the kennedys
