take a look at huntington beach, california.mal experts are hoping this full-grown common dolphin will eventually find its own way back to open water. it swam through a local in a tidal gate yesterday into a narrow channel and couldn't find a way out. it stayed there through the night. we just spoke to a marine biologist on the phone and he told us they're not planning to intervene and just wait and see what happens. this biologist expects the dolphin will eventually figure out how to get back out through the gate and back into deep water. jacqui jeras, i know you've been on phone with somebody. high tide will help the dolphin get out? >> yeah. my understanding. you want a little more depth to that water to help guide him out there and find the even deeper waters eventually and lie tide, just about 5:30 pacific time. this is the area we're talking about near huntington beach, california. just to put it in perspective. here's los angeles, and here's huntington beach. tough to follow really cute dogs and dolphins. >> in terms of t

what we're looking at, huntington beach, california. in the water, that is a dolphin. and this dolphin is a little too close to the beach, to the shore. you're looking with me. appears to be swimming in circles here. this is a channel near a nature conservancy, crews are watching here as this dolphin is circling. this is very, very shallow water. it looks like two people maybe there on the shore, trying to see if the dolphin is okay. bystanders they're on the road nearby as well. chad myers, here we go. a closer shot of this doll fen. do we know how shallow the water is and how the dolphin ended up here in the first place? >> this is on the other side of the beach. this is the east side of huntington beach. there are not many ways in and out for this dolphin. been swimming around for a couple of hours. people on shoert seeing him there. there's a way in and way out. they just have to figure out how to get the dolphin back out the way he came in. the only way to do that is to try to push it along or scare it along in the right direction.

can you just first talk me through what folks there on the ground in huntington beach, what the situation is what they need to do? >> i think the first thing is that you have to assess whether or not this is an animal that is in need of human intervention or not. and so, you know, from what i've seen, there's a pod swimming somewhat freely and then this one particular animal that's a little bit away and stranded. here normally if we have a situation like that, we would try and actually move the single animal and move it out toward a deeper water area. often times you get animals, these are common dolphins. they're supposed to be in deep water. once they get into a shallow area, particularly a wetland area, it's really confusing for them. >> what can happen? can you hammer home how dangerous this is, how urgent this is for these folks to get this dpolphin to deeper water. >> as long as the animal can stay afloat, they're not in immediate danger. it's when they strand they don't have the ability to survive. neck suffocate under their own weight. the animal is still afloat, it has some time.
