joining us is jake ward in huntington beach, california. jake, the president biden is selling this as a newsom versus trump fight. has that messaging been effective among california voters? >> at this point, it's very interesting to be certainly in this voting center, to be here in huntington beach, california, orange county, 1.8 million registered voters. huntington beach, republicans outnumber democrats 40% to 31%. it's one of the few urban republican strongholds in the state. so when you speak to voters here, it's very interesting to hear their sentiments. it is a general dissatisfaction with the way the country is going and dissatisfaction with high taxes, the high cost of living here. have a listen to what voters had to say this morning. >> i think it's time we stand up and make our politicians realize they can't be overstepping and failing to represent us. >> you voted republican? >> oh absolutely. >> why? >> because of everything, everything. the costs in california, the homeless situation in california, the illegals. >> we're either

. >> joining me now, nbc's jake ward in huntington beach and steve patterson in sacramento, where the governor will be tonight when these returns come in. jake, you're in orange county where supporters will be relying on big republican area, big population area. how's the turnout seem to be? what can you tell based on mail-in voting? >> you know when you think about california politics, you think of course about progressive politics, right? it's famous for a reputation for antiwar protests and progressive environmental policies. well this is not that california. this is orange county. referred to sometimes as the orange curtain as you cross from l.a. county to orange county. republicans outnumber democrats in this particular place and in a way you don't see in the rest of california. california's republican strongholds in the past have been rural places. this is an urban republican stronghold. very unusual in california. we're seeing turnout already at polling places in huntington beach of over 30% and in the people we have spoken to, there's a deep sentiment that taxes are too high,
