nasa is releasing these images showing the sheer magnitude of the hurricane from space. idalia set to be one of the most powerful storms ever to hit that area of florida's western coast. some cities are already starting to see the early effects of the hurricane with flooding reported in pinellas county. but one of the storm's most dangerous effects won't be fully seen for hours after it makes landfall. forecasters are predicting deadly storm surges, as high as 15 feet in some areas. here is what one official told me earlier about the potential impact of idalia's storm surge. >> the closest we've ever came to a storm surge like that on our coastal communities was back with hermine. we got maybe 4, 5 foot. and we're low laying in some of our communities on the post as suwannee and horseshoe. it was devastating. we had a lot of major damage to residence and structures. for us a storm surge with a potential of 16 foot is just total, you know, catastrophe and devastation. and there is no way people that stay down there can survive that, unless they get to elevated ground above that.

atmospheric administration released these satellite images where you can see the massive nature of hurricane idalia gets closer to florida, as well as hurricane franklin, which is further out in the atlantic. on the ground in florida, these are pictures out of fort myers. idalia could bring up to seven feet or two meters of storm surge to the densely popular you -- densely populated tampa bay area. wind speeds are expected to reach on hundred 25 miles per hour or 200 kilometers per hour. 49 of the state's 67 counties are already under some form of evacuation orders. prior to evacuating, residents placed sandbags around structures to protect homes and businesses from flooding and storm surges. ron desantis said in preparation, 1.1 million gallons of fuel are on standby, as well as 5500 national guardsmen and 250 starlike internet devices. . 40,000 workers are ready to's -- ready to restore power. damages inevitable so evacuation is essential, said ron desantis. >> you have time, particularly in the northern part of the state, you have time to evacuate. you don't need to outrun the storm. cat to high

what makes idalia such a dangerous hurricane? >> right now it's the surge.he winds of this strength can push quite a bit of water, and that area of the gulf is extremely susceptible to storm surge because the gulf is very shallow and flat, so that allows the storm to push all of that shallow water up into the land. so obviously the winds are quite dangerous, but the storm surge, the span of the storm surge is much broader, a much larger area, so you might have the eye itself is not typically large, but the impact of the surge goes well south of where that eye will impact the shoreline. >> i want to ask you with your reporter/journalist hat on here in the past storms you've covered and the perspective you've brought from past storms and looking at this one, through what lens are you -- are you looking at idalia, and how are you seeing it now? as it approaches a few hours away now from that making landfall? >> it's really, you know, the atlantic basin has become so much more active in the last two weeks, over the last 14 days or so we've had five active system

peninsula merges into the panhandle as a category 4 hurricane between 6:00 and 9:00 this morning, eastern time. that's just a few hours from now. if idalia does make landfall as a category 4, the national hurricane center says it'll have sustained winds of 130 to 156 miles per hour with a very high risk of injury or death, and it would likely produce catastrophic damage. another major concern is an expected record breaking storm surge of 12 to 16 feet in the landfall zone. florida officials warn the surge could impact areas up to 200 miles south into the tampa area and may leave portions of of that region uninhabitable for an extended period of time. several areas of idalia storm surge are expected to be higher than hurricane ian's last year, which you'll recall devastated the fort myers, florida, area and killed 149 people. in addition, hurricane force winds will extend 25 miles outward from wherever the storm makes landfall. the tallahassee national weather service says that the wind will likely cause significant damage, which also could leave the areas hit uninhabitable for several weeks or maybe even multiple months. as idalia tracks

earlier today it only became a hurricane this morning, idalia. earlier today we had a low-end hurricane this morning, about 80 miles per hour. now we're up top 110. so we went from 75, the baseline for a hurricane, up top 110 and we're expecting this intensification to continue and quickly. here's the wind field you have tropical storm conditions occurring on florida's west coast but the intense inner core about a hundred miles off to the west of pinellas county and 150 miles south of the big bend. now the issue is you have this motion off to the north at about 17 miles per hour. that's going to bring that inner core to the big bend, or perhaps curving through the northern part of the nature coast here probably by about 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. from there, you're moving through the skinniest part of florida at a good clip, likely at that point up to about 20 miles per hour. this is going to quickly bring hurricane conditions toward places like georgia, arcing up the coast hurricane conditions possible along the coastline up into the carolinas.

i'm jessica layton we begin this morning in florida where hurricane idalia is barrelling toward that state's western coast. it is expected to make landfall as an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane south of the mallsmall town of perry. a cat 4 means sustained winds of 130 miles per hour or greater with the potential for catastrophic damage, uprooting trees and yewutility poles. entire areas could be uninhabitable for weeks or months because of that wind. the entire coastline is under a tornado watch. forecasters are warning of a record-br record-breaking storm surge from 10 to 15 feet high states of emergency are effect for florida, georgia and south carolina michelle grossmann will have the very latest on idalia's track. >>> in the meantime, the biden white house has spent this week preparing for idalia's impact, coordinating with the local governments and getting emergency services ready across the south. for more on this we go to brie jackson in washington. what is the federal government doing for florida at the moment? >> reporter: good morning, jessica, the white house is wo

hurricane idalia is intensifying very rapidly tonight, now packing winds of 105 miles per hour. eye of the hurricane is now 155 miles or so southwest of tampa and moving north. it is expected to slam into florida as a category 3 storm by early tomorrow. governor ron desantis is warning everywhere in the big bend area that they are going to see a storm surge and now is the time to get out. officials in taylor county, which is southeast of tallahassee, say that the surge there could possibly exceed 15 feet and that anyone who is caught in it would not be able to survive. evacuations have been ordered in at least 22 counties. the outer bands of idalia have already been hitting the florida keys and the southwest coast. here's a view of the storm from space. nasa released these images from the international space station just as it passed over it. cnn is tracking this storm across the entire region. we have full team coverage for you tonight in this hour. cnn's carlos suarez is on the ground in tampa. our meteorologist chad myers is at the cnn weather center. and we have key state off

we begin in florida — where people are bracing for the arrival of hurricane idalia. orm — described by forecasters as extremely dangerous — is heading towards the us coastline. these are the live pictures from key west in the south of the state. the hurricane is expected to hit further up florida's west coast. evacuations are underway in 21 counties and residents have been warned to prepare for violent winds, intense rain and a potentially life—threatening storm surge. these are the images of the storm from 250 miles above ea rth�*s surface. the international space station passed over hurricane idalia as the storm churned over the gulf of mexico. it's been moving north, and is now a category 2 hurricane — that's according to the national hurricane center. that could mean winds of up to 110 miles per hour. but, as ever, it's the storm surge that has the authorities most concerned. this is the situation on the ground. this footage was taken from a sea front hotel in key west. the wind and in evidence. in the last hour florida governor ron desantis had a message for peop

hurricane idalia will likely be an unprecedented event for many locations in the florida big bend. y, no major hurricanes have ever moved through the bay. you try to compare this storm to others, don't. no one has seen this, unquote. the post goes on to warn, quote, this is your last day to get prepared. conditions rapidly deteriorate tonight. brian todd is standing by in st. marks, florida, that's south of tallahassee. you're at the top of the so-called big bend. that's where the panhandle meets the peninsula, the west coast of the peninsula. are people in the low-lying areas there, are they following the evacuation orders? >> reporter: as always, some follow those orders, and some do not. we just spoke to officials at the sheriffs and emergency management agency. they have said this town is under a mandatory evacuation. they have sent deputies door to door, asking people to leave the town. but as you know, you have been through several hurricanes in this region before, a mandatory evacuation means they cannot physically pull you out of the house and take you from your town. if you

to get more updates about hurricane idalia. we're tracking how this storm is moving and the damage idalia is causing. a special meeting was held by the san francisco unified school district to deal with the budget problems. it's a lot. the school district has been losing revenue and enrollment is down. ktvu amber lee has the details. i ask everyone to please come on in to the board meeting community members and parents arrived early at the offices of the san francisco unified school district to attend a special meeting and workshop. they came armed with signs to express their concerns about how the superintendent and the school board will address problems, including declining enrollment, staffing shortages, his aging school buildings and budget challenges. our school in particular needs a lot of repairs, so i have a concern that maybe if they start accumulating a list, our school, which is 80% latino, will probably be on this. many parents are concerned that the district may close schools as a way of addressing problems. they op

hurricane idalia claims his first death making landfall in florida are now a category one hurricane. still bringing fierce winds and water searches. these are live pictures from clearwater in florida. all around the state there is flooding, one man died in the big bend region after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree. some areas of the state are already seeing flooding, with knee—deep water covering roads and inundating towns. these are the latest pictures from jacksonville near to where the hurricane hit land. although the storm has continued to weaken the winds are around 90 mph. that is 150 kph. earlier florida governor ron desantis said 16 foot storm surges were expected in some areas. more than a quarter of a million people are without power. the hurricane is not crossing into southern georgia and we are expecting an update in the next hour from the authorities in florida. in a briefing just before the storm made landfall, florida governor ron desantis warned people against taking any risks. you don't want to be messing around with these winds. there's going to be t
