and then the hurst fire that you see that's just west of san fernando. and then we have the eaton fire that is also off towards the east of glendale. so just looking at all of those fires on the map and this red flag warning that has been extended through tomorrow, and it may not be until friday when the wind starts to calm down with the santa ana wind event, we get high pressure that builds east of the sierra that forces the wind to come through the mountain, and as it does so, it's compressed and warmed up, but it also dries out as it moves through the desert. and any remaining humidity continues to decrease as it squeezes through those canyons and creates those very strong winds that we've seen topping over 100mph in some of these cases. so we have the hot, dry conditions as well as the very high fire danger as all of this wind blows offshore. and you saw in jennifer's live shot just how strong those winds were blowing. yesterday we saw this fire explode, the palisades fire. and this has been the case for a lot of the fires that have been developing.

that includes the hurst fire, now threatening the san fernando valley and the surrounding area. it started just before 1030 last night, and between then and now, it has forced 44,000 people from their homes. and much of southern california is under a state of emergency. the eaton fire, now threatening the pasadena and altadena area, which started four hours earlier, creating what cal fire c called an immediate threat to life. telling people to leave now. it all started with the palisades fire that ripped through nearly 3000 acres from the pacific palisades. this is really rugged terrain, and in one canyon there is just one way in and one way out. and at one point,olice told people to just leave their cars and get out on foot. those vehicles, later shoved aside by a bulldozer making way for fire crews. one man described that scene by phone to our sister station in la. palm trees near us started catching on fire, and then some flames came down the hill to the point where there may be like 10 or 15ft away, and either a fireman or a policeman. i think it was a policeman started tell
