patterson: huston was born in 1891.he south had only been 20-30 years removed from a civil war over slavery and race. after the civil war, segregation began to dominate american society. not that it wasn't there before, because it was, but it became really chiseled in stone after the civil war. so, she comes into the world into the 19th century and builds up into the early 20th century. she grows up in eatonville, florida. she was born in, i believe, alabama and her father and his family took her to this new area of eatonville, florida. he founded a church and that is where she spent her childhood in this, for her, veryhosome community of all-black people. her families, the church, schools, and so on. i think it was a different kind of story at the time it came out . her book would be in the time period of richard wright's "native son," which had a character that was severely damaged by the experience in the united states. it was set in the real world, it was different from any other novels that were coming out later in
