nick valencia back with us now there in hutchins texas. investigation and the next step forward? >> reporter: the investigation is still a very active one. crime scene tape has lined the area where the shooting happened at about 12:30 a.m. local time. i've been speaking with eyewitnesss and they describe a very chilling, haunting scene. one eyewitness i just spoke to said she was on her way down to the lower level, a restaurant when she actually saw -- she actually saw a suspect. she couldn't get a very good, clear photo -- i'm sorry, a visual of him, but she did see that suspect using that armored vehicle, trying to smash it into police. she saw the flashes from the muzzle. she said the whole incident from what she could tell lasted about five minutes. we talked to other residents here who were also within that loft. there's a group of lofts around the shooting scene around dallas police department headquarters. one witness told me that it lasted about 20 minutes. she could hear heavy gunfire. she thought it was the television. she told h

as we continue to watch these live pictures right there out of hutchins, texas, our breaking news coverage continues, authorities are right now trying to determine if the suspect in the attack has died after his vehicle as you see right there the blue van, it was shot by police. police have surrounded this armored vehicle, that's how they have described it. one that this suspect apparently used while conducting a gunshot, a gunfire right outside the dallas police headquarters and heading about 18 miles over time to this location in hutchins texas. we've seen the robot that's approached the vehicle there it's believed that the bomb squad robot will perhaps try to penetrate this vehicle. determination will be made. whether the alleged gun man inside has also been hit. just as police also try to shoot-out the engine block. here's how it all began in the early-morning hours. of saturday. oh [ bleep ]. >> all right so this is how it all began, cell phone video being captured by many eye witnesses, you see right there, it's believed to be the blue armored vehicle ramming into a police squad car,

teams surrounding the suspect or suspects in the plural near the city of hutchins texas. this after shots were fired early this morning outside of dallas police headquarters. explosives were also apparently found. more now from nbc news' charles hadlock who is on the scene in dallas. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this is still is a very active crime scene. you see the police officers behind me guarding the dallas police headquarters about two blocks that way. the street is covered with shell casings from massive shooting this morning, about midnight when this black armored van pulled up and began firing on police officers in their cars. police returned fire and began chasing the vehicle. that vehicle is now 20 miles south of dallas in the town of hutchins in a jack-in-the-box parking lot. negotiations were under way earlier this morning. we don't know where they stand right now. but when negotiations began with this man who police describe as a 36-year-old white male who told police, quote, you took my child and called me a terrorist, and now i'm going to blow you up

left behind as police chased that van to hutchins texas left were four bags and at least one of the bagsns pipe bombs, and police surrounded this neighborhood evacuated people around the two-block area as they investigate the crime scene and try to detonate those bombs. dara. >> we see that it's still dark because the sun has not come up yet in dallas. is that making this more complicated? >> reporter: a little bit. you have darkness they have to locate all of the shell casings fired in this shoot-out at police headquarters. this is a busy street between city hall and the police station here, just on the south edge of downtown dallas. the standoff scene is at a jack in the box restaurant about 20 miles from here on interstate 45 in the town of hutchins. police surrounded the van there, there have been more gun shots fired from there. police have been negotiating with the man, they have him on the phone, say he is upset about a custody battle. he said quote you took my child and claimed i was a terrorist and now i'm going to blow you up. >> that's an interesting because that's changed the

officers have cornered a van outside a jack-in-the-box in nearby hutchins texas. the morning. >>> one week after the escape police believe these convicts are still in the area surrounding a prison. police have been doing grid searches and going door-to-door along route 374 near plattsburgh, new york. joining me is nbc's john yang. with hundreds of officers searching in this relatively small area how close do you think they are at this point? >> reporter: well they're telling us they feel they're getting closer. as you see, it's a relatively small area south of the prison. it's been a week but instead of expanding in larger and larger circles, the focus remains here. they say they have no evidence that they've left the area even though there have been no confirmed sightings of these two guys here or anywhere else for that matter. meanwhile, joyce mitchell the prison worker is now behind bars. she's accused of smuggling in hack saw blades chisels, a punch and a screw driver drill bit that helped these guys escape. according to the charging document, she brought thes

officers chased the suspect from downtown dallas several miles south of town to a parking lot in hutchins, texas. casey stegall has been following this story since it broke with the latest. casey? >> reporter: it is certainly not every day that you see a police headquarters in a city turned into a crime scene. but that is exactly what we got right back here. they've allowed us to get in closer. we've counted at least 30 bullet holes in the front of dallas police headquarters and look at that police cruiser just in the middle of the road. the doors open. we counted at least eight bullet holes in that. two officers were ride not guilty -- riding in it at the time. no one hurt. remarkable some 17 hours after this all went down and investigators say the man pulled up to dallas police headquarters, opened fire with an automatic weapon. police also say he left explosive devices here in the parking lot loaded with screws and nails to do more damage. two people bombs were detonated safely. he led officers on a chase 11 miles south of here. that's where an 11-hour stand-off ensued in a fast food restaura

the suspect then led officers on a chase about 11 miles south of here to hutchins texas, in a fast food parking lot where his vehicle became disabled because an 11 hour standoff ensued after officers fired shots into the suspect's armored van to disable it. police say a sniper also hit the suspect through the windshield. we just learned before the top of the program that dallas police confirmed now that the suspect is dead though they're not revealing his identity. investigators say prior to this going down the shooter had called 911 and gone on a rant aboutng responsible for him losing custody of his son and now dallas police report two additional pipe bombs were found inside the suspect's armored van on the scene, 11 miles from where we are. i am only two blocks from dallas police headquarters. police said they found more explosives in the vehicle. there have been reports of witnesses down there of two loud pops. controlled explosions if you will. we presume dallas police have detonated the two pipe bombs just as they did with the two bombs that were here at police headquarters. rapid

officers gave chase in their police car south of dallas to a parking lot near the jack-in-the-box in hutchins, texas. the car parked and stopped there at around 12:44 a.m. while in the parking lot, there was another exchange of gunfire between the suspects and officers. squad cars were struck during that exchange. however, no officers were injured. the suspects refused to exit the vehicle, at which time officers set up a perimeter. the s.w.a.t. team was called and has since began negotiations with the suspect. s.w.a.t. officers are currently talking with the suspect by cell phone and trying to find a peaceful solution. the suspect gave a name to identify himself but we have not confirmed that's him. that name he gave us was james boulware. b-o-u-l-w-a-r-e. he's a white male, 5'10", 200 pounds. witnesses at police headquarters gave preliminary information that there might be more than one suspect. there might be up to four suspects. and of these suspects, they were shooting at police headquarters and at police officers from different locations, possibly elevated locations. but we have yet to confirm
