and one about what has happened since the end of it two months since cassidy hutchinson spoke. that, to me, is really the core, aside from their missing text messages is. i have no reason to have any opinion one way or the other about tony ornato before any of this. i know that it was highly unusual, and quite controversial when he was given a political position working as deputy chief of staff on secret service, that's a line that is essentially i think as far as we know never crossed before, or very rarely crossed. so there's some controversy around that. the thing that i just can't get over is, cassidy hutchinson comes forward, on television, under oath and gives this testimony, and immediately there is this obvious effort to knock her testimony down. by folks that wouldn't go on the record, anonymous or an sourced, saying things like prepared to testify under oath. yet here we are two months later, and that has not happened. >> right, a couple of days after she testified we all sat back and said it is her entire story going to fall apart, because you saw all the stuff getti

that's before cassidy hutchinson's testimony. that change anything in terms of getting him in potentially to speak again? >> yeah. i think it can. let's talk pragmatic matters. you saw what happened with the fbi executives who were caught up in the whole january 6th thing, the trump thing. the entire trump presidency, esse essentially. and one of them lost his retirement and others were afraid for their retirement. that's their source of income for the rest of their lives, essentially. and once it's granted, it's much harder to take away. that may be one thing. the other thing is he doesn't have to be subordinate to instructions from the secret service or the executive branch. if you look at the way he phrased his notification, he says, as of this day, i retired. i've not known many people who give no notice of their retirement. i'm gone. that doesn't work administratively in your administration. that belleaves everybody like a film broke on a movie. you don't know what's coming up next. he said he is going to pursue a career. th

five years ago, hutchinson took up the case. a tip led him to determine that karen's killers could be one of four brothers from fresno. >> it comes down to getting dna samples and eliminating or including the potential suspect. >> it turned out to be gary ramirez, who now lives in maui. work is being done to extradite him. hutchinson tells me there is no evidence he and stich knew each other. ramirez has no criminal history, but hutchinson believes it is possible he could have victimized more people and asks anyone with information to come forward. i reached out to a brother of ramirez who told me he did not want to comment. karen's parents did not see this arrest made, but hutchinson says he was able to bring the news to extended family, a moment he will never forget. >> they did the hard work keeping her memory alive, continuing to care about her. >> former raider marshawn lynch facing charges after police say he was driving under the influence. inch was arrested in las vegas this morning near the strip. police say he was driv

do you think that it was cassidy hutchinson's testimony that changed the equation somehow? >> well, you know, i'm not sure what drove his specific date for retirement. clearly, he's eligible to retire, so he is, i think, what i'm going to be looking for is, you know, there are all these statements immediately following cassidy hutchinson's testimony from named and unnamed people in and around the servcret service that were trying to cast aspersions or doubt about her testimony. they said, they looked forward to testifying, they look forward to filling in and correcting the record. well, we haven't seen that, and clearly the january 6th committee as indicated an interest. they've already spoken once to mr. ornado and approximate kpresed an interest to speak to him again. i'm very interested to see if he does return to the committee. if he doesn't, whether or not the committee decides to issue him a subpoena, and what plays out from that. but i don't think we've heard the last in terms of the interaction between the committee and mr. ornato and i think there's interesting inf

but hutchinson was raised in a law-enforcement family and he grew up hearing about the unsolved casers. >> a lot of emotions that come up in me, not even being associated with the family. really, i mean, this has been five years of my life dedicated to this case. >> reporter: karen stitt was last seen alive on the night of september 3rd, 1982. a deliveryman who ultimately found her naked body, just 100 yards away, found the throne close and her stabbed 59 times. the case went cold until new dna technology led to a crack in the case. and finally one week ago, hutchinson and local police arrested 75-year-old gary ramirez at his home in maui. >> i will say that he expressed some shock and surprise. >> reporter: the detective says that there was nothing much to go on, the at a local 7-eleven, and mini golf at a nearby golf land. her boyfriend told police, he last saw karen walking towards that bus stop on el camino real and south wolf road, just after midnight and for decades, that's where the trail ended. but recently, detective hutchinson, and the cold case investigators submitted dna

to governor hutchinson's point, the credibility of the justice of hermann is on the line.artment is on the line. people from both parties want to know what is going on. >> i do not think there is any question that the attorney general of the united states understand that better than anyone. all of those that are with him in his staff understand that. they have to make those decisions. i do think that this is a different case. obviously i think there is much more that should and needs to become public. if it will not in any way jeopardize the investigation. again, i think people want to see an independent justice department that will make decisions consistent with the rule of law. that is what they have been doing. you have not seen a bunch of leaks coming out the justice department. they have been doing their work, i have been telling people to be patient. they will continue to do their work. at the appropriate time, this will be made public, there will be more information made public. whether it is the charges or the unsealing of the affidavit. i trust the justice departm

i want to start by talking about cassidy hutchinson.what did you make of today's testimony and did you relate at all to what seemed to be her experience up there? i thought cassidy was unbelievable today. and i was obviously proud of her. on the one hand, it was very relevant, of course, to the themes in the book. a lot of people that i interviewed, all my old friends and colleagues who, you know, decided to not do the kind of that cassidy did today. to me, frankly, i think the most striking thing in in thinking about this in the context of what i've been working on for the last year, is all of these grown men and women, all these grown ups, important jobs that were supposed to be in service to the public who have kids. they're supposed to be setting an example for, you know, who who got into this business. i assume most of them, because they wanted to make a difference just sitting the sidelines angling for their next job. and leaving a 26 year old woman to hang out to dry in front of the whole country. i just i couldn't help thinking

this is almost two months to the day where cassidy hutchinson made that explosive testimony. it's worth noting that he had testified to the house select committee prior to the testimony. but certainly he became a central figure, or more visible finger after that testimony, someone that the house select committee had made very clear they wanted to hear from again. members that the committee had pointed out that he had retained a private counsel. our understanding is that it is not exactly clear where those discussions stand between bringing tony ornato back in for another testimony to show up some of these details about cassidy hutchinson's testimony. >> if you could talk more about -- to the political post in the trump administration. the implications of that would be? >> don, i think i lost you. i'm sorry. i think the other question you wanted to ask me, and i'm hoping i'm hearing this right, i'm sorry, i lost your feet. the big question here is about the unprecedented move that he had made from the secret service to the white house. this was at the time not a huge story, bu

it comes two months after cassidy hutchinson, that white house aide gave that revealing testimony before the january select committee. ornato has been before the committee twice in january and march, but has not been before the committee since cassidy hutchinson's testimony. the big question here is whether he will. as you played some of that sound, he talks about how ornato told her the former president was irate on january 6th that his security detail would not take him to the u.s. capitol grounds after he gave that fiery speech at the ellipse and how he lunged to the security detail to try to get them to take him to the capitol. ornato was not only once the head of trump's security detail, but he also went and worked for the white house as a deputy chief of staff before returning the the service. ornato is now leaving the agency. he told cnn in a statement that he's retiring after more than 25 years, working for five presidents. he said he's going to work for the private sector but specifically said he will not be working for the former president or any of his entities. >> very intere
