i am a chicago native who grew up in hyde park, not far from 53rd and hyde park boulevard, the park that sits across the street from where mayor harold washington lived when he was mayor. i was a kid at the time in grade school but i remember clearly when he was elected mayor how much that area changed where there was security sitting across from his apartment building. the snow got cleaned that much faster along our streets. i grew up in one of the few racially diverse communities in the city but it was still -- and it is a black community. my parents were very intentional about making sure we were part of all of it. we went to the fish store which was owned by a black man. we ate bald when ice cream that was black owned, we would point at the boats in jackson park harbor that were owned by pillars in the community, we ate leon's barbecue, we were very much a part of the dense community of folks that were like us and in many ways that is how we became friends but it is also launched so many other folks like us and i think one of the things i remember is when obama's star was rising and
