opportunity to speak with deputy superintendent richard grunsa and to hear from board commissioners hydra mendoza and sandy fewer and we've also heard from sfusd staff and we're really glad to see that the district is focusing on setting clear and consistent standards across the district for students and that there is a focus on high expectations for all of our children. we know that that's a really important priority for families across the district. we also believe that the district's focus on core curriculum is a good step and we're interested to see how that's going to be implemented

i looked to hide ra -- hydra every single week to advise me what programs to support and increasing with our school district, whether it's anti-truancy programs, whether it's ending violence, whether it's increasing educational opportunities and getting all of the gaps covered. and we know i did -- we did a very, very good move, we found several hundred thousand dollars to make sure there was summer school for kids that weren't able to pass math and science classes. that's a new requirement in order for them to go on. that's made all of the difference in the world. i don't know if their youth was appreciative. assuming their parents are. we're on a very, very good track. as your mayor, i want to make sure we celebrate the opening of this office. we know the very first programs coming out will be the c.y.c. bay view youth advocates that started this program right away. they're here in the presence of all of us as a witnessed to fact that when we have challenges for any community, our youth want to be part of the solution and this is inclusive of all youth. bay view youth, youth that will

that is why i keep hydra very close to me. every two weeks, we are meeting to discuss what we can do for our school district. what -- where can we help? so we are not only using our rainy day fund properly, but we are doing the added work to identify every single gap so this scoring and performance can continue not just to fill the gaps but to have the highest level of achievement possible for the students here because those companies are going to start recruiting in san francisco even more than they are. companies come in to san francisco -- it is not because we have a good tax system. in fact, they have to pay a lot of taxes to be in the city. it is not because the streets are where they want to be. it is not because there is a must--- mustached mayor sitting in room 200. all of the clean tech companies are coming to san francisco because they are looking for the work force -- the work force -- the workforce that will make them competitive all over the world. they are looking for the talent to help them. the talent can come

[laughter] i have to tell you, on behalf of the school board, and i know that hydra mendoza and the school board members are here -- i really want to say thank you. we have the privilege in our beautiful school district to serve 56,000 students. you're sort of going to go and thank all the different groups that got here because it really was an effort by everybody, but i'd want to 0.1 thing out, and that is this project has been long coming. i have to tell you, i think why it finally happened is because everybody, all those names that people have rattled off -- the mayor and everybody else -- i have to tell you, the thing that brought us together is that all those people, including the school district, all of us -- we left our egos at the door and said this is more important than anybody's ego because this is about a community, not about individuals. it is about all the folks who actually live here. we come here and make some speeches, but we are going to leave. it is about the people who are going to stay. if we can build this community to be successful, the hours -- and our future will b
