[applause] apparently, tonight is hyphen's night. so congratulations to hyphen.] a quick word about the organization. it was founded in 2003. it's a volunteer run nonprofit news and culture organization that illuminates asian america through hard-hitting investigative features on the cultural and political trends shaping the fastest growing ethnic population in the country. it engages people through our print magazine, website and events to fulfill the commission to tell the untold stories of asian americans with accuracy, nuance and complexity. to showcase emerging artists, creators and leaders of our community and to build a socially and politically aware community through media, dialogue, and cultural events. it's been honored by chinese for affirmative action, with the flames of justice award in 2008, nominated by the utney reader for -- for utney independent press award, best new title in 2007 and in 2010 for best social and cultural coverage. so again we say congratulations to you. the phenomenon that you're talking about, with hyphenated names, his a sign that people see the poetry of their lives in those ethnic or religious attachments. so i am wondering where that poetry would come from. it seems to me that to strings or three things were laid out by the panel -- to build things are three things were laid up by the panel. we come from something that essentially would be our poetry, something that would have to unite all of us as americans. as harvey suggested, some is selling ourselves to other. that could be a common purpose. ron williams suggested somehow a common purpose is aspirational or, to use charles's turn, a dream. what has been poetic about this is this aspiration to do best for ourselves, to improve ourselves, to live up to certain ideals and, sometimes, especially with someone like roosevelt, to take that to the world. my question is really what the panel thinks about the possibilities of those things as the source of poetry but also how they would work together. one is in working and one is out looking. looking and onerinward- is outward-looking.

we are not hyphenated americans. we're all americans.a of being americans is that we are in fact a global community. as the old commercial said, "we are the world." that image is important to get across in many ways. there is a problem in television of not having enough arab images that are not negative stereotypes. there are millions of others in this country. there are hundreds of millions in the arab world that do not get reflected. i think that does damage to the understanding of people here and abroad about the complexities. take a moment to look at what happened on 9/11. we did not pay attention to the fact that of the 3000 died, there were people from every race, ethnicity, and every nationality who are americans -- including many arab-americans who died in the towers. they were first responders on that day. we're the world. we pay the price as a country. all of us do. we all work together to defend the country. host: in your book, you spend time trying to break through some of the myths. the first one is that they are all the sam

however if you take an individual who may not actually -- who has an issue with their name, a hyphened last name. >> one of the provisions here does say that someone needs to show i.d. if someone's stopped for a crime. you all are more so opposing the parts that have to do with employers and whatnot, but any other provisions that you have a problem with in this law? >> there are provisions that penalize people for assisting people that are in need. i have had restauranteurs say to me so if i take an individual to the hospital that cut their hand, i would -- i could be penalized for taking that person to the hospital. >> that's not true. the law says you can't transport someone if you are -- if you know are an illegal immigrant and you transport them to further their illegal status taking somebody to the hospital is not the same thing. >> there are many immigration attorneys will tell you there will be cases made on that. there will be people penalized. the bottom line is we're alienating, we're profiling against a certain group of people. the asian community are just as concerned as
