i know i could help% my work when i am in college. i think it is important to bee prepared and to get ready for the future. when it seems hard, metro has ways to protect us. when teachers stay late and do whatever it takes to make sure i guessed the grave -- make sure i get what i want. i know a d will not get me to college, and i like how no one at metro will accept that as a grave. good metro is a great school for people who think that all schools are the same period of people who think metro is the same as -- for people who think all schools are the same, metro is like a family. metro cares about coming together as a school that supports each other. because we are small, i feel like i get lots of attention. i know i am struggling, and when i need help, i can expect my teachers and the advisers to help get me back on track. this is important to me that i can stay focused and make my family proud. thank you. >> i am part of metro. i have a progressive outlook in terms of how i see things, and by progressive i mean we have to makeovernment and make the city work for everyone, and that means that it's not just those who are doing well, it's also those who are not doing so well, those who have the least. but it also means making sure that the city works for the middle class. >> good evening, everyone. good evening. thank you all for being here. and when we first got into office about two years ago, we started talking to the mayor's office of workforce and economic development and trying to figure out how we can help different corridors within our district have a better sense of what that neighborhood should look like, what its main concerns and priorities should be and a strategy for the community. and that means business, residents and the city working together to make whatever that vision is a reality. ultimately if there is a guidance on how i approach government, i believe in good government, i believe in transparency, i believe in accountability, i believe in making sure that we follow best practices. i thin

[laughing] i'm really honored to be here. i'm the toy department. i write novels about the types of cases that lawyers like tony handle. in the daytime i work for a big law firm of the type that tony probably would not hold in the highest of esteem, but i'm delighted to be here. you know, i think if you talked to most authors, they will tell you that there is something hot-wired into our system that says we need to try to tell a story. there is nothing at all in my background. i am an absolutely accidental writer. there is nothing in my background which suggests i should be writing novels. i grew up in chicago. i write books about san francisco. i studied accounting at the university of illinois. i have been a corporate and securities attorney for 28 years. i've now written seven best-selling novels about murder trials, death penalty cases, and courtroom drama. i have never handled a criminal case in my life. [laughing] so all of you out there who are thinking of writing novels, there

i was sketching and thought, i could do this. i found it exciting and i was looking for the -- the emotional moments in the trial of which this particular one, it was rich. and the lawyer said, tony sarah is drama and the law at its best. wears clunky clothes from the thrift, goes to the podium without notes. he's incredibly hard-hitting and perceptive. he drives old clunker cars. he has long hair. he's just the opposite of everybody's image of a lawyer. and this is the person you want to draw. so that's how it came to be. >> and you spent 17 years on the book. did you follow tony's trials during that time? >> i followed tony in and out of the courtroom for about 10 years. being in tony's presence is a lot like having an overdose of x-rays or something like that. he is intense. once he sort of dumped this book on me -- it was never intended to be my book. it was supposed to be my art and his book. one day he came schlepping boxes and said, here, it's your baby, i don't have time. and i was left crushed under the avalanche of his

i hope they do. i love the idea of it. i want it to happen.hink your word is perfect organically. >> thank you. >> mike: poverty rate, biggest increase in the poverty rate we had since 1993. more americans living under the line of poverty than we have seen in such a long time. let's talk about the significance of that. sandra, let me start with you. give me a grade. the obama administration have they addressed the root causes of what is going on in poverty? >> to be fair i gave a c minus. >> mike: okay. >> and the reason i say that is that i don't think the president and the administration are doing nothing. i think they are almost acting like a triage doctor and they have the patients coming in and they are bloody and hurting and a mess and they are throwing a band aid on the patients rather than fixing the root of the problem, the root of the health of the economy. instead, they are trying to throw stimulus and trying to promote food stamps. they are not addressing jobs. and if we address the root of the problem, jobs, then, you know, everyb

at this moment i am glad that i do not live in the marina. because the marina green will be greatly private sized, not only for the race, but for nine months or more which people being cut off from their front yards and the waterfront beyond. what i am concerned about in the plans recently approved, the contradictions with those plans. that e.i.r. was solely base on the concept of public open space and the use of the open water access and the open water for public recreation. that part of the city is greatly underserved. the waterfront recreation, and that particular project was a major -- this particular e.i.r. and the plans for the america's cup seem to be kind of looking at that particular project site a little differently. the next point, and you have to really look is the treasure island plan. the treasure island sailing center is the only public water access non-profit organization on treasure island serving families. the deir identifies the parking lot, a very small area, as a helipad location. helicopters and water sport in that locat

and i got some concerns because i do have a family and raising three kids. and i think people are a responsible business for all these years and are with our parents and educating us about being responsible and to the neighborhood and to be respect to feel the neighborhood. and conditions of how we would open and close through the type of alcohol and one of the things that was really great is the fact that we're there for so long over 42-plus years and to think about our neighbors and the families and all that and always thought about how we closed the restaurant and kept it respectable so that the neighborhood could come back to the original form and people wouldn't be nervous about so much about night life alcohol and stuff like that. and and some of the things we really grew up and thought about not hurting the neighborhood. it's been so successful, i think the fact the neighborhood never actually attacked us in ways of coming at us is do this or that. complaints about the noise in the back. some people we thought openly, talking, reaching out and we let

i don't. you know, get a flatter tax that will spur more economic growth and get rid of some of these unnecessary loop holes. but you can't take more revenues and dump it into more spending because that exass baits the problem of spending. so i don't preach all this for ideology. it just makes good sense. if you have too much debt and you get in trouble, if the cost of doing something is too high, you don't do it. that's why high taxes are bad. and if you take a look at ohio you see what we did. we had an $8 billion deficit. we didn't raise taxes. we would have become less competitive. we cut taxes. rereformed our entire plam and we got an improvement in our credit rating. we went from negative watch to stable. so my favorite rating agency is s and p. >> kate. >> i'm wondering as former budget committee chairman where you would be looking for cuts if you were on the committee. i mean, does $1.5 trillion over ten years would you be up for a grand bargain? big cuts or entitlements you would supp
