then i went back to some of the files where i wasn't sure whether i had desks, -- well, i thought i had done his desks but i knew i had done it holding the shelf, which was a famous picture. then there were some new people i wanted to add. i particularly wanted to photograph ann petrie because i'd been hearing so much about her. every time i went to hear skip gates talk, he would talk about this book called "the streak" that was written in the 1940's by ann petrie. so i went to the bookstore, found the book, found out who her agent was, called her agent and her agent called her and before i knew it i was driving to old saybrook and taking that picture of her. and we've stayed in touch a lot, and that's been a huge pleasure. in that picture of her, i wish that there had been a way in the book to even tell more about what was going on, but up on that shelf you see a mannequin's head with a hat on it and that is because she grew up the daughter of a pharmacist and she went to pharmacy school, and was working in the pharmacy and then started writing, and submitted a book of hers to a hought

it was not what i intended to do when i was a kid. i really lucky and i do enjoy it. it takes me sometime tutor -- to forget that the camera and the crew are there and feel comfortable. with stage, you have two or three hours and no one can tell you to stop. you cannot see anything because the lights are so bright. you can fall into that world that you cannot -- in a way that you cannot when someone is yelling, "action! cut!" if you come on and you do mess up, you have two hours to redeem yourself and find your way back in. it is kind of exciting. i like that. tavis: is this for real unfolding the way you thought it would when you got in the business? with every move you do, the expectation grows and you keep doing these projects that generate oscar buzz. i am curious as -- i am curious if this is rolling out the way you thought it was? >> no. i just wanted to do plays and i wanted to -- i thought it would be amazing to be in film, but i wanted to be in theater. just to work consistently as an actress is beyond anything i thought. to be doing it with the directors and

i feel like i know so much more than before i started campaigning. i am a good liberal democrat. in the san francisco, miniature spectrum, i am considered pretty middle of the road. one thing about me is i am very independent when it comes to the issues, and i do not vote on party lines. i judge each issue on its merit. we have provided woefully inadequate support for our transition-age youth, and when we do not provide that support, we end up causing other problems. it is not like it disappears. these are our youth, who are here in our community, and we need to make sure we are providing services for them. yesterday, we had a hearing on the dcyf budget, and i was very disappointed with one aspect of the budget, particularly the alt and backs were being eliminated -- that all add-backs were being eliminated on a number of different subjects. i do not agree with that. i am in discussions with dcyf, and i am is hopeful we will be able to work something out. my predecessor was always committed to making sure funding occurred, and i will continue to do that, so you have an ally in me

well i -- i threw my first outside party when i was 21 and met the owner of bimbo's. pictures of frank sinatra and glen campbell and i said, what is this place? he was telling me, my place was the place where everybody would go to see big-name entertainers. that kind of inspired me. through my course of my career, and promoting, i felt that the only way to reach salable of any promoter is to own a nightclub. as you know, a lot of the city places are owned by former promoters of san francisco. what happened is, i built a business plan, the trucadero nightclub. a sister club of studio 54. the owner -- the neighborhood wanted to shut it down. abc and the police wanted to shut it down. the guy was definitely on his last leg. he asked me to propose something to put to renovate this club. first i thought it was a great idea. at the same idea it became the glass cat. i was happy to keep it going. that club has been there since 1977. we have been there 12 years and we remodeled to go another 10 or 12 years. that said, a lot of problems come with a club like that. neighborhood

can i say it? because this inability to share or -- what i don't understand is with strong communities or strong leadership, the obvious leadership roles in the committee structure. there is also significant time commitment. i am concerned that both the president and vice-president -- or the structure simply flip flops, the time challenge will be continued. many meetings have been canceled because both commissioners had no time because they both have very significant of full-time jobs and they are simply not available or maybe not interested, i don't know. there have been many missed meetings. i really am confused why the strongest commission can't be formed. i don't believe this is the strongest team, and i believe it will be a much stronger team if we had an actual small business owner on the seat. you know, it is in the interests of the strongest commission, and frankly, it is easy enough for a majority of the board the marginalize this position. there are two very strong positions for dea lot o

and then i also, i was, when i started writing the book, i had just turned 39, which if do you the mathuld mean in about a year's time, i would turn 40, and that happened. >> smith: has that in fact happened? >> hodgman: yeah. yeah. >> smith: you are now 40. >> hodgman: yeah and that was not supposed to happen to me. >> smith: right. >> hodgman: so it was a time of somber reflection in my life, quite honestly. and especially as i approached the writing of this last book in the series, i'd always imagined that it would be three books of nonsense and balderdash, and i always knew that the last one would be called "that is all", for various reasons, that's the way i've been signing emails for 15 years, so i thought that was a good title for a book. >> smith: right. >> hodgman: that was the end of the thing, and it wasn't until i realized that it was going to be a book about endings, about things concluding in my life and then obviously, things concluding in the entire world to the tune of ragnarÖk. >> smith: yeah. >> hodgman: that i sort of had the subject matter, which was how do you writ

i said, yes. he said, can i see more of it? i said, you bet. i even asked his name. ends up this is lorne michael, and he is going to the clubs in new york looking for writers for this new show called "saturday night live" that was going to premiere in the fall. i go home to long island and a type of what i believe for a 1100 of my best jokes. two days later, i have to go back to the city for my meeting with lorne. i was so nervous. what should i wear? well, hip new show. i will dress hip. i put on my father's marroon polyester leisure suit. i looked like a big blood clot. i looked like a big blood clot. i went to the city.

i think i was supposed to be gay. i think that's what happened. then they forgot to flip the final switch and they just sent me out. and they were like, "you marked that one gay, right?" and it was like, "oh, no, was i supposed to?" and they're like, "oh, well this will be a very silly person." [ laughter ] a lot of little boys are gay. you know, they're very flowy, and they have hard opinions on things. [ laughter ] i don't mean that i was a sexually active gay man when i was a child, that's not what i'm saying. i was more like a 65-year-old, 70-year-old gay man that's kind of over it sexually. you know what i mean? i was like an old queen. i would just walk out to recess and i would be like, "everybody get out of my way. i just want to sit here and feed my birds." the gym teacher would tell me to play kick ball, and i'd be like, "you want me to do what?" i am sorry that i almost forgot. but can you imagine what is going to happen during the year of 2012? we have a historic mayor. first chinese-american. the best mayor in the whole world in my opinion, but now, he got elected by the people of the city as the first asian elected mayor. should we all give our wonderful mayor a 22-year experience in city government a big round of applause? [applause] as i said many times during the several events that i was involved, you can see the history continue to be made by our great mayor in the next four years, eight years, and beyond, believe me. our mayor has already shown his leadership ability to all of you. you know, what he has done -- i do not have to repeat what he has done. you have your own judgment, and he is a visionary mayor. he has done everything for us. not only chinese americans, but the city and every part that is involved. we're so grateful that the mayor, together with our president of the board of supervisors approved this program. we started talking about it
