i hope that works. i think my preference would have been to take the so-called gang of six, the people that worked for a year on the deficit-reduction plan where i think is a whole lot better and make them, if we're going to have a special committee, make them the folks on the committee. that ain't going to happen, unfortunately. they would have been my nominees, my appointees, but it's not my decision to create. anyway, we're going to create this joint committee. sometimes i think if we can't come to consensus on good public policy, what we're inclined to do around here is just to do more process, and i hope and pray this isn't more process. i hope at the end of the day the men and women who serve on this joint committee will be open to our input, certainly open to the input of some of the senators, including the democrat and republicans who served as, on the deficit commission and who went object to be part of this gang of six. the last thing i think i want to say is this: a lot of times in government,

i hope they make the movie. >> well, i do too. but i think in all honesty the hard part is knowing what i saw with my own eyes and thinking that somebody could ever replicate it. listening to your min on the radio doing things that people normally see on movie that is are severe and wondering if they can ever really capture the, you know, the true terror and exhilaration that the guys went through. it's kind of a double-edged sword. at the end of the day, i had a good friend of mine who gave me some really good advise. i originally told him i just want people to know about the story. i don't really want to get wrapped up in how successful it is. you got it all wrong. you want it to be overwhelmingly successful, because that's what you'll know that people are really starting to find out about this. >> you made a promise at the end of the book, maybe you want to comment on it. he said they have literally used every bit of ordinance in that part of afghanistan. they had to call in planes from carrier. >> i wish dave was here tonight.

i hope you guys enjoy your vacation. i will come back and talk to you.resident chiu: thank you very much. next speaker. >> i hope i have your attention, but this is really important. you know that your mayor passed a resolution with the u.s. congress of mayors calling for the troops to come home, the money to come home. please do not let this be a political issue. this is about revenue generation for your city. i would like to see the board of supervisors put teeth into this resolution and make it your own. it talked about the severity of the ongoing budget crisis and shortfalls that require us to reexamine actual -- national spending priorities. the people are paying $126 billion per year to wage war. what i tried to show you last week -- i was here with a picture of the constitution being shredded. that has happened. you swore an oath to uphold and defend the constitution. you could use your power right now. what did pelosi just do? she did not do a very good job of holding the ground to say we do not need another credit card for and constitutional ref

i hope we can get together. i hope that the two committees will get together and resolve this issue. i'm not on either of the committees. i'm just someone who around here has had to stand up on some of these labor union issues. i'm not against unions. i'm one of the few persons in this whole country who actually earned a union card and became a skilled tradesman and worked for ten years in the building construction trade union. i'm proud of it. i have got to say i'm going to call on both sides to get this problem solved, get rid of allowing the national mediation board to usurp the powers of the legislative branch of government and get the law back where it was, where it's more fair and where it makes sense. if we do that, i don't see why this would be held up for ten seconds. so i come on both sides to try and resolve this issue. i don't feel good being in the middle of it. just because i happened to be on the floor at the wrong time. all i can say is having gotten in the middle of it, i have to say as much as

i'm glad to hear these guys say that, but i fear the end of the day -- i may be wrong, and i hope they are sincere about that -- but as you well know, the devil is in the details. what many of these guys believe then, which i do not, is a trickle down economics. if you lower tax rates for large corporations, which is what they want to do, that somehow, magically, we create millions of jobs and everyone lives happily ever after. i happen not to believe in the trickle-down economic theory. i think it benefits upper-income people. we know that there are large, multinational corporations that make billions in profits to pay sometimes nothing in taxes. we know we are losing about $100 billion a year to the wealthy and large corporations stashing their money in the cayman islands and bermuda and other tax havens. if the republicans are willing to look at those areas to raise revenue for our country, i would be delighted and hope that that happens. >> if this super committee doesn't come up with an agreement, there's a trigger that keeps an where automatic spending cuts kick in. -- an automat

there are ways that we can work simultaneously and i hope we can work that out. all this takes unanimous consent in the senate and we will do everything we can to see if i can get that. we need to send it to president obama as soon as we can. it has been a long process and i am confident we did the right thing for the american people. the solution cuts the deficit now, lays the groundwork for congress to do much better work in the months ahead. it clears the way for us to look at the bright sunshine and get rid of the clouds of default hanging over our country for far too long. but our work is far from done. i am hopeful and confident we can get this done very quickly, this legislation we are working on now. but we still have to do things. many people in nevada and around the country are struggling for the essentials, that is, a job. we have to move to a jobs agenda. we need to move toward that as quickly as possible. we need to put this debate behind us as soon as we complete this legislation and put americans back to work. >> [inaudible] >> the question is, is t
