, i don't know. there's a fascination, and sometimes it's like a morbid, you know, kind of unseemly fascination, but i have over the course of the reporting, i feel it's changed a little bit. at a certain point, the recession ground on and on and on, there came a point when it seems like people who are not from detroit really wanted detroit to succeed, like, it became almost like a story where you want the street urchin to become the president of the bank, you know? [laughter] it was like an inspirational story because people looked at their own cities, wherever they are in stockton on scranton or jefferson county alabama, and they are looking at detroit, which has got the reputation of being the worst place, you know, and they are thinking, well, if detroit can make a comeback, then we have hope too. that comeback narrative has been, you know, that's, you know, real incapslated in the super bowl ads really resinated in ways that shocked me, you know, but it kind of makes sense. >> no, it does. i thin

a very saturday i know for me and a lot of people and i think we all know being in a position and particularly when you are running from scratch, when you start trying to generate support and something that is hard at the beginning and people are not sure what is going on and it's hard for them to get people to say yes and i still -- sean was the very first person who endorsed me when i ran for a full two years before the election i still remember sitting down and ordering coughity and he said absolutely of course, and sean you have stuck with me through a very hard campaign and coming on the board even though you are younger than i am you have you have been a mentor to me on the board we don't always agree on thing but you have always been there everyday i needed help, advise and there have been times when we disagreed and i remember after the nudity hearing and committee when someone announced that we were a block and they agree on he have gone and that might be true for me and carmen i think we good agree on a lot of stuff but sean and i have disagreemen

culturally a lot of things i wanted to know. i knew i wasn't going to write about myself and knew that i was not going to write about my family. but i wanted to write about an aspect about china and women. those were the 2 things i knew when i began the first book. i was fortunate enough to it stumble upon the silk working women which gave me everything i wanted. it gave me the culture. it gave me a sense of what it meant to be a female chinese women in that time and a sense of empowerment on what they had done. regardless of what they understood they were doing at the time. they didn't know it was a culture that was earning money and living independent of husbands and family that was doing everything against what it meant to be in the chinese culture. i hadn't heard about that and it was perfect. it was exactly what i was looking for. i can go off and preach about the fact they think so many of us asian american authors and asian authors in general tend to go back and write about our ancestors and write about things in our past
