i went over to take a look and i saw this all-male judiciary committee. years, but here we are. i want to particularly welcome senator ernst and senator blackburn. i think it is extraordinarily important that this committee be representative of our society at large. we are growing that way. so thank you very much for being here. i would also like to welcome bill barr and his family. i know you're proud to be here and you served as attorney general before from 1991 to '93. i think we all have great respect for your commitment to public service. when we met, your previous tenure marked a very -- we talked about a very different time for our country. today, we find ourselves in a unique time with a different administration and different challenges. now perhaps more than ever before, the country needs someone who will uphold the rule of law, defend the independence of the justice department, and truly understand their job is to serve as the people's lawyer, not the president's lawyer. top of mind for all of us is the ongoing mueller investigation. importantly

i agree with what cynthia said about mueller. lookoblem here is that it came out yesterday that bill barr didn't just write this 19-page memo. but he gave it to the president's private laurps. when you're an attorney general, you're actually a judge when it comes to supervising the investigation. that's how you are. you can terminate the investigation. you're the last stop. and the idea that an attorney general would supervise an investigation in which he gave private information, private views, to the personal lawyers of that investigation, i mean, just imagine if, brian, you were the judge, i was appearing before you, and it turned out you as the judge had written a memo to the other side's lawyers. how would that make me feel on the other side as a little gaig? also the southern district investigation, and all the host of other things we've been seeing, you know, all these investigations of the president. >> aren't there other factors? wouldn't it be like me writing stephanie ruhle a memo that she hadn't asked for that spoke to her

and i think this is very true in the financial world. when you looked, in those days, at the banking sector, trading floors, it was vastly dominated by men. and nothing against them -- don't get me wrong -- but i think women bring different skills, a different approach, and diversity, in and of itself, because it challenges the way in which people think, is actually valuable at a time when you have to evaluate risks and you have to make decisions. that's why i said that. it would have been a different story if there had been more sisters than brothers. >> so, not so much that women are better at running financial institutions but that the diversity that women bring to the table prevents the groupthink. >> correct. that's absolutely the case. and we've just completed a study on that front which clearly shows that when there is diversity and when there are women in board, in executive teams, then the stability of these institutions is better. >> is it just that their diversity prevents the groupthink, or is there something inherently different about the w
